Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Post spay advice please! :)

Hi everyone,

Lene had her spay yesterday, she seems fine but not eating very much at all and now drinking unfortunately. She has done lots of black poos though.

I went to the vets and got somw metacam and fibreplex and she's had that with no probs.

My question is, should i try and give her water? The vet didn't say so, he just said give her the pain killers but I don't know what to do. She's only eaten a tiny bit of carrot too. Should I wait for the pain killers to set in? x x x

Have you tried to tempt her with foods she likes, also some different herbs, kale etc. You could also try to mush up her pellets with some warm water to tempt her.

Try a dash of boiled water in her water (so it is luke warm, mine love it like this), try giving it in a bowl so she can help herself.

I hope she is feeling better soon, if not it may be best to pop her back to the vet.

:wave:HI, TRY SOME SLICED CUCUMBER, AND GRATED CELERY AS THIS HELPED MY BUN AFTER OP AS HE DIDNT DRINK, I GOT EXTREMELY CONCERNED AND ADDED A DROP OF RIBENA TO HIS WATER.HE DID EVENTUALLY DRINK BUT IT WAS GOOD 11HRS LATER.WHEN I SPOKE TO VET SHE DID SAY GIVING HIM HIS VEGGIES WOULD BE FINE AS THEY CONTAIN WATER.HOPE YOUR BUN SOON FEELS WELL.:D

I can sympathise. It is a worrying time. I stayed up all night with my Penny after her spay as she reacted quite badly to the anathesia.

I think you just have to follow your gut and do what you think is best. I just held the water bottle to Penny and squeezed it a little. If she wanted it she would drink it. At least her bowels are moving. If you have any uneasiness at all - take her back to the vets. It won't hurt and it'll help set your mind at rest. I found it did take quite a while i.e. a good three days for the girls make a full recovery. Let us know how you get on x

After Angel was spayed i soaked some grass and dandelion leaves in water which she ate.The black poo,s are normal after a spay.

Thanks for the advice everyone. After I gave her the painkillers things took a turn for the better and she ate a piece of cabbage and a few pellets. This morning she seems back to her normal self and has destroyed her hutch  She hates been caged and normally has free run of the spare room. Right now I have her in a 4ft x 2ft indoor cage decked out with baby blankets to make her rest and she's not best pleased! (Purely temporary!!! I wouldn't house her for very long in that!)
