Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD Questions

Pipstrel

Mama Doe
Jake our new bunny is being vaccinated against Myxi today and then VHD in two weeks, we are then looking at collecting him the weekend after his VHD. I just have a couple of questions as I don't want Piper and Minstrel to get ill.

  • Can vaccinated rabbits still get VHD like they can get nodular Myxi?
  • How long after he has had his vaccination is he covered? Is it 2 weeks?
  • How is VHD passed, through air, water, bodily fluids, or fleas/flies?
  • If I keep Jake upstairs in the loft bedroom and Piper and Minstrel are outside but do come into the lounge for a run round will this be ok?
  • Can VHD be passed on your clothes and things like that?
Thanks very much sorry for all the questions!
I'll be booking him in for his neuter too as soon as he arrives. He's fairly laid back what do you think the minimum is I should leave before introducing him to Piper and Minstrel?

Thanks

however I still don't know if vaccinated rabbits can still catch it? Any ideas?

AFAIK *both* vaccines offer good protection. More so than the Myxo Vac. But there will always be the risk that a particular Bun does not have a good immune response to the vaccine thus rendering it less effective.
No vaccine can ever be considered to be 100% effective.

Ok thanks Jane. I'll be keeping him away from them for the two weeks anyway but we'll be extra careful about washing hands etc.

It might be an idea to get him on a course of Panacur as well, as Nia came from vic's . Ask her to get him started on a course now. She'd be better to ask for the liquid one as it's miles cheaper and I expect you'll want him on the full course, not just the 9 day thing.

Ok I need to phone the vets to pay for the vaccines to I'll ask them to give her some panacur for him too.

Thanks
