  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My bunny is 7 years old now. He is eating a lot, but there is apparent weight lost. The Vet has said that he may have a tumor in his pubic area. His often falls on his left leg and can not get back up. We gave my bunny Metacam and realized that he didn't respond very well. We stopped the usage after the that. We also gave him two doses of panacur. I am not sure if he should be taking those medications because it seems like he has no energy after the doses. I am wondering if you know what other signs of cancer there is. such as in the pubic region and if it would affect the leg area? The "tumor" is an inflammed area about dime sized. If my bunny does have cancer, what is the time frame for his remaining years? I am extremely worried about him. It would be greatly appreciated if I can get as many responses as possible!

Hello :)

Is your Rabbit an entire male ? Did the Vet suggest aspirating the 'lump' ?
There are many causes of weightloss in the older Rabbit so has your Vet also considered Dental problems, Kidney problems?

Metacam and Panacur seldom causes drowsiness as a side effect, certainly I have never encountered it in any of my Buns. Without knowing what the lump actually is ( ie benign/malignant tumour, abscess etc) and whether there are other things going on to contribute to his weightloss ( ie Dental problems/Renal problems/arthritis resulting in muscle wastage and 'stress induced' weightloss from chronic pain......) its hard to give advice in terms of prognosis.

I would go and have another chat with your Vet and maybe mention some of the above. Even if your Bun does have a malignancy, as long as he is kept pain free and contented he will be able to stay with you for a while yet :)

Please keep us updated about him

Hi I'm sorry I don't have any experience os such problems, but Jane's (above) advice is always fab so I'd definitely recommend having a longer chat with your vet about the possibilities Jane's mentioned.

Also if you dont feel terribly happy with your current vet if you post where abouts you are then someone on here could recommend a bunny savvy one to you if that would help?

Good luck, I really hope you can get your bun sorted x x

Yes, my bunny is a male. My vet has said that there was no way of actually getting rid of the "tumor" because it is on the pubic area.

I am wondering if there are any other chances that it is not swollen? The infected area is swollen. And it seems like there is some little dots resembling little pimples.

He is still very active and is still very happy. I am just very concerned that he keeps tipping over because of the "infection".
