  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Stasis/Gas

Herbert'sMum

Herbert had a really bad bout of stasis/gas in the early hours of Monday morning. I managed to nurse him through it with my 'bunny medicine chest' before getting to the vets. He is now pooing again (although small) but remains a bit subdued and his appetite is not 100% (he is nibbling at greens/pellets here and there). Is this normal and if so, how long does recovery normally take? Thanks in advance.

Its still fairly soon after his stasis, so I'd just keep an eye on him over the next 12-24hours - make sure you offer him lots of fresh tempting foods. If you have some pro-biotics for his water that will help the gut-flora re establish too.

Did your vet give any reason for his stasis? If its an ongoing problem, then he mightn't feel up to eating until its sorted out.

The vet has given me some recovery powder (I assume this includes the Pro-biotics). He gave me this instead of fibreplex which I have problems administering. The vet didn't give me any reasons for the bout but Herbert does have problems with abnormal roots/teeth so it might well have been pain due to this. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I will keep on syringe feeding/offering tasty morsels and take him back to the vet if no improvement in his appetite by Thursday.
