  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Need opinion ASAP!

My cat brought a tiny wild rabbit into the house unharmed. Its eyes aren't open. I can't find a nest. Ive got 2 options. Put it outside in a small box and hope the mother comes and finds it. Or I can bring it to the ASPCA in the morning. I'm thinking the ASPCA is it's best chance because it's in the fourties out and will probably get into the thirties tonight and there are a lot of cats always roaming at night. What do you think?

Oh!!

I shouldn't put it outside if that is the case...but then I'm not too sure if it will survive the night either depending how young it is away from Mum. I would imagine it's best chance is inside. Keep it warm and...GOSH! I suppose keep it warm and await further advice from other members more "savvy" than me!

GOOD LUCK!!!

TP:shock:

I cant really give any advice but I would defo second not putting the lil chap back out

Flipping cats is becoming a regularity here at mo, one yesterday as well wasnt there

Rabbits can not pick up their young and carry it. Are you in the states? If so your wild rabbits are cottontails not european's like us in the UK :) I think cottontails nest on open ground - if you can find the nest then you could try putting it back in but otherwise taking it to the ASPCA would be best.

There are specialist cottontail rehabbers, you could try asking around your local vets/humane society or even the telephone directory to see if there are any wildlife organisations near you that can help.

If you say where you are I might be able to find a contact for you.

Can you phone your nearest vet for advice? All vets will have an emergency number. A friend of mine had the exact same thing happen last year and the vet came round but unfortunatly the baby bun had died by the time the vet arrived :(

Do you have a hot water bottle? I would place a hot water bottle in a box with some grass and water and just try to keep the baby warm and feeling secure x

Definatly keep the little one warm and try to re-create a nest for it. A shoe box stuffed with soft straw, hay or even a blanket or towel would make a nice bed. Keep it's body covered but make sure it can breathe. I would also try to phone the nearest vet for advice.

Oh! I'm really pleased to hear that it made it through the night - Well done!!:D

Hoping the ASPCA can work some magic for the little thing. Whatever happens you've done all you can and given it the best possible chance of survival. That is one LUCKY wild bun!!!

TP;)
