  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Could it be an abscess?

Help!

My newly adopted bunny has been holding his front leg up the past day...He is eating, drinking, pooping and weeing as normal, and he is still happy to move around alot except holding his leg up. He doesn't seem to be in any pain.

This is confusing me greatly, i picked him up to examine his leg and when i felt it on what would be his elbow joint (i guess) there is a big lump. I blew gently onto the lump and there is a brusied looking spot on it. I am aware the lump could be swelling and am taking him to the vet in the morning but could it be an abscess??? I have not had any experience with abscesses in Bunnies so am not sure what i am looking at or even if i am looking at one.

As far as i am aware, he has not hurt himself since being here (since friday). He had only come into the rescue the day before that so i am thinking if he had been bitten or wounded then it would have become an abscess?

Am defo getting him to the vet tomorrow morning, for now i have confined him to his cage incase he has injured it so that he won't put any strain on it. :(

no as far as i am aware he hasn't, and from the sound of his previous home i would say this is unlikely. There is defo a lump on his leg. His previous owners had a doe and buck both unaltered that were just allowed to breed over and over again, there were several litters that he was part of. They couldn't take care of them all properly and i am wondering if when he was amongst lots of other buns he might have been bitten.
