Hi, I don't live in Ayr, but somebody who does posted on another forum about the dreadful condition of the animals at Belleisle Pets' Corner. She has contacted the SSPCA - as yet no joy from them!. She also contacted the Animal Welfard Office for South Ayrshire

She says that

Rabbits with weepy eyes, mites, and very poor diets...people throwing carrots in all the cages and trying to feed the rabbits stale bread and other assorted bad foods. There was straw...no hay.

I did not count how many buns but I think at least 20 are at this place.

I also noticed several types of chickens caged in with the rabbits and they didn't look too good either. One had picked all the feathers off his chest...or one of his friends is doing it.

This is a pretty bad situation. Does anybody here have any ideas about who else could be contacted to try to get this situation resolved quickly so that the animals have much better conditions?

Apparently the council had wanted to close the pets' corner down, but have kept it going following pressure from the public! It's on a 6-month reprieve at present.

If you say that the council have wanted to close it, why not go back to the council. I know in England that the Enviromental Health people monitor petshops, I am unsure about scotland ... however I am sure that they will be able to advise you.

I jst googled this pets corner and the local people are up in arms about it being closed down

Just goes to show most people don't have a clue on what are good living conditions for rabbits.

A friend of mine who lives in Ayr notified me of this, she's had contact from the various agencies and will keep on top of it also :D She won't let the buns down, she's a lovely and very determined lady ;) , she's doing it all in honour of a neglected bunny who died before she could save her.

This is awful. I'm originally from just outside Ayr and I used to go there as a kid. I've not been in about 15 years though. Poor animals!

The person who witnessed it did complain to the council and also tried to get the SSPCA to take a stand but got a complete nil response, which is why she brought it to the forum I read it on to get people to act as well.

A few of us have complained to the council but all we've had is the stock automated response that it's being passed on to the person responsible and we'll hear in due course - in the meantime, the situation for the poor animals in this place hasn't changed at all.

EDIT: I've just heard from the original person and there's a council meeting tonight with this on the agenda. She's had a lot of people phoning them to complain, so I hope something gets done soon.

I do live in Ayr. I know for a fact that the rabbits and other animals at Belleisle Park in Ayr are cared for to a very high standard. The animals are looked after by someone with 30 years experience, an honors degree in biology and who is devoted to those pets. The animals get two vet inspections a year and the person who looks after them gets constant praise from the SSPCA (where some of the animals come from). All the animals at this park are unwanted pets or rescued. It is evident they have lots of room, company of others, stimulation (logs and other toys etc), are always being cleaned out, got fresh water and their carer has them out on a regular basis grooming them and letting them out on the lawn. If i were a bunny i would be very happy at this Ayr park. I can only assume this woman has got the wrong place.

There are a team of experts looking after these animals and through its recent publicity over a possible closure (due to the council cut backs) there is strong opinion from people who adore this place and praise the work being done here. Please get your facts right before slandering somewhere you have never been and lets concentrate on helping those who really do need help. Like those bunnies being tested in labs, or to the 30,000 that are dumped each year, or worse still- the ones still being reared in awful conditions for fur and meat!!!

To further put everyones mind at rest i have more information on the rabbits at Belleisle park. I write to strongly defend this place as i AM a resident of Ayr and this park has been part of my town since the war and its well loved.

The vet has just been there and gives all the animals the thumbs up. (I share the same vet). There are some old animals there but they are all pets and just because they are old is no reason to put them down. I was told "all are in good health and body condition for their ages" and he goes on to praise the young girl working there.

So i find it a real shame for someone to have made up some fictional story and have a friend from the other side of the boarder plaster it all over the internet. I only hope the girl who works there is none the wiser.

It was a real insensitive fool to have done so before getting their facts straight!!

I feel strongly on the matter because i visit this park almost daily and am one of many trying to save it. The council have no money so it is being handed over to the people. It is registering as a charity and being run by a friends group. As it is a rescue centre for unwanted, abandoned and rescued animals it needs support. If the woman who is responsible wants to help then she should put her money where her mouth is and help this wonderful place have a future!! I have certainly done my bit and am raising funds to help.
