  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Do rabbits burp?

I don't know about burping, but Flo makes some strange, high pitch sound noises at times that sound like hiccups! Don't know if they are though! x

Nigel 'hiccups' too, usually after eating or grooming. He also moans, groans, squeaks and grunts, but no burps as far I know. He does parp though!

I don't think they can. Once anything is in the stomach it can only go one way.......down. This is why you don't need to starve a rabbit before an operation because they can't be sick. It's also most likely the reason why bunnies are so prone to gut problems as gas can't escape.

Having said that, I'm probably completely wrong.

that would have been my reasoniong too. but having said that Charles has always been gurgly :)

I'm not sure they can burp......they can't throw up and I think it is roughly the same mechanism. Mine hiccup though.

I am beginning to think I misheard him & that is was probably a 'growl' in disguise!
Thought I ought to give him the benefit of the doubt :D
