I bet i sound realy silly asking this, but my female rabbit keeps trying to 'mate' with my male rabbit. Why is this..?

You don't sound silly at all, lots of people have asked the same question.
They'll be trying to sort out their dominance, who is boss. It is very normal and best to leave them to it as long as the other bunny isn't too distressed and fights aren't breaking out. Neuturing can help if they aren't already. Are they quite a new couple?
I've had Dillon and Connie together for a couple of weeks now and Dillon is still mounting Connie occasionally.

they have been together since we got them about 2 years ago...he is neutered she isnt.

any reason she is not neutered?
Neutering would help solve the mounting problems, and also ensure she does not get uterine cancer - which otherwise affects about 60/-70% of female rabbits before the age of 5 (approx.).
If you decide to neuter her ask round a few vets to see which has most experience and lowest rate of problems in doing this.
