i have just been to my local fish shop which is massive. It sells all sorts from mice to snakes. I was looking at the buns which were kept in clean cages that were okay on size, but none of them had hay. I asked someone who was there and he said he was about to clean them all out and give them all hay, he said look there is the hay waiting to go in all the cages, well there wasn't much at all so hopefully they use a lot more.
Anyway there were a lot of single buns, i asked what happened to them if they didn't sell. He said they go back to the breeder who either sends them on to someone else to be breed from or she breeds from them herself:cry:
He said they get too big and people don't want them and so they just swap them for a younger one:cry:
On the positive side there was a bun that had been born in September and he said as he was getting bigger they wouldn't put another bun in with him as that wouldn leave them much room:)

Well done for asking questions :) more people need to.

Is that the Koi place?
I have been asking them awkward questions too. They didn't seem to like it much. :)

yes was the Koi place. Kay do you foster for the RSPCA?
Aww I hate the hutches they sell at that place so tiny, makes the hutches at Argos look decent
I used to foster over a year ago now, but when I separated from my ex I had to stop due to house move getting life back on track etc. I no longer have any spare hutches but would love to get back into it again.
Currently volunteering at a local rescue though. Why do you ask? :D

i foster for the RSPCA and i know of another fosterer in Letchworth called Kay so was wandering if it was you, obviously not as she still fosters. which rescue do you help at? didn't know there were any local so would be interested to know where it was. I help out at the rabbit residence in Royston but this is quite a way and takes me a solid half hour to get there. i Live in Arlesey so only a few mile form you:D

I have reported the place you are talking about to the RSPCA for other reasons. We very rarely go in there and I hate the place.
Hi Sue, I help out at the Blue Cross in Kimpton. Not just bunnies but dog walking etc. I have started to help at the Rabbit Residence too but admin work only. I have re-designed the application form and just started on the other forms now like bonding/boarding etc, also I agreed to receipting which could be quite a task as Caroline says she has 2 years worth of them . It is a long way isn't it, its 19 miles from here. Although I'd love to help out more I couldn't afford the petrol for it to be regular.
I am glad that Koi place has been reported to the RSPCA, I've not been there since they advertised that they were going to sell small animals. They had been selling hutches for ages beforehand so nothing to report them on. The manager is a complete :censored: <- add your own foul word. Money money money thats all they care about.

I'm so glad Caroline has more help, she's such a lovely person and does amazing things for the rabbits.:DI try and get down there most weekends, i tend to use my hubby's car as his firm pay for petrol and they said they didn't mind:D
I'd love to know why you reported the place to the RSPCA, though will understand if you're not allowed to say:)

It sounds like a place near me? but i guess as your in Bedfordshire this place is in Bedfordshire?
Place near me also sells Koi, tropicals and coldwater fish. All the tanks are filthy, with a selection of dead fish in. Iv reported it to the RSPCA before as they had a half dead Red tail catfish that was stuck trying to turn round in his tank that was way too small for it. There is a tiny pet shop next to it where they sell mouse hutches, rabbits and guineas are kept together, males and females are kept together. The guy also breeds the animals in the sales pens. I have also seen guinea pigs kept in the bottom of his aviaries with budgies and cockatiels. They also have chickens kept in filthy tiny houses on gravel with no clean food water or bedding. And to top it off theres a duck pond with about 3 goats living there too , one of which is in the most terrible matted state with overgrown feet on all 3. I have reported this place to the RSPCA numerous times times, and the local council, and guess whats changed. Absolutely NOTHING. Good old RSPCA :roll::roll:

So you blame a charity with no real powers in the law, that is trying to help animals rather than the pet shop? I wish people would educate themselves about what they RSPCA are actually able to achieve.

The RSPCA are there for us lowly members of the public to report bad animal husbandry. By taking no action against this awful pet shop what is the point in any of us actually reporting anything to them? Of course its the pet shop at fault in the first place, otherwise why would I attempt to report them? The list of abuse in my previous post is enough to say it is the pet shop at fault. But after being reported to the RSPCA on more than one occasion the conditions are still exactly the same, so what was the point in me reporting them to the RSPCA because they have done absolutely NOTHING!

The RSPCA is not a government body, nor is it government funded - it is a charity relying on donations. They are extremely restricted in what they are able to achieve by what the law allows them to do. I'm sure the inspectors are as frustrated and upset as you are at not being able to help the animals.
It sounds a completely different place to the one I mean. The one I was talking about has reptiles, fish of all types and now small animals rabbits etc. I didn't see any goats and the cages weren't flithy. I asked them why the rabbits didn't have any hay, and what advice they gave people when they purchase a bun (none unless they ask), I asked them whether they would sell one of their medium sized buns or any bun complete with the 1.5ftx3ftx1ft  (yes thats really the size) hutch they have out front, they said yes! I asked whether they thought that was acceptable behaviour and told them about the guidelines in place by the RSPCA and the RWS, I was asked to leave if I wasn't buying as they had other customers to deal with!
I left some leaflets in each of the hutches out the front so the people thinking of buying them would at least see that its not recommended.

well done it's awful to think that a poor bun could live it's life in that size cage,
It's not the pet shop that 'Losing the plot' is talking about thankfully as that one sounds dreadfull:cry:

Just curious...... have you followed up your complaints and asked to speak to the inspector who attended to ask what the outcome of your complaints were. If as you say they did nothing when there was a clear animal welfare issue, have you made a proper complaint to the rspca re their lack of action?
....oh and please remember like others have said ,you are talking about a charity here , not another government department.... and it may well have been investigated but at the time of visit the law did not allow the action you feel should have been taken to be taken.
