  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Agh. Syphyllis isn't going away.

My two have been treated for syphyllis again, and whilst Desmond's nose has cleared up both times, Douglas' genitals don't go down completely. He isn't retracting his foreskin completely and so the infection is colonising down there and therefore keeps returning two or three weeks after treatment which is scary for them, and costs about £120 each time. Now, the vet wants to have Douglas in for a light sedation so she can look at his willy more and clean under the foreskin. I'm terrified about this as my previous rabbit died from GA, and also this is costing me a small fortune in vets fees. Sympathy for my wallet and for poor little Douglas and Desmond. xx

Havent offended me so I will reply!!

Poor bunnies having sore bits - perhaps if the vet looks under sedation he can finally get to the bottom of the problem and treat properly? Dont know much about the infection to be honest, but wanted to wish you good luck x

I dont have any advice Im afraid as Ive never had a bunny with syphillis but Im sending lots of vibes to both bunnies and healing ones to your wallet :D

Have i offended anyone? no-one seems to reply to my posts

Hello,

Only just seen the thread and I wouldn't class myself as one of the more knowledgeable lay people on the forum. However I can sympathise with the cost for the treatment...a big OUCH. Hopefully someone will be along soon with suggestions :).

When Tinkerbell had Syph, she had an op to remove one of the lesions on her nose, which was sent off for analising. It came back as positive Syph.

She was given a penicillin or anti biotic jab, can't remember which, which got rid of them. I didn't even know that there would be lesions down under so never checked

Anyway, the nose lesions started to reappear after a few months, so she had 3 injections over a short period of time and the Syph has now not reoccured for about 18 months.

Did yours have a course of 3 injections?

yes this is their 2nd course of 3 injections. I have managed to retract Douglas' foreskin a little to clean underneath, but when he goes to the vets, he wont let it come out!!!! poor little mite gets so scared that he 'puts it away'. fingers crossed mine can go for 18months without as was 5weeks apart before they showed symptoms again

Are they both treated at the same time? That could be the other thing with them passing it back and forth between them.

I don't know if there is anything topical that could be used as well.

It's not that common a problem which is probably why there aren't to many replies. You could try getting your vet to get in touch with a specialist and see if they have any suggestions.

Yes they have both been treated at the same time. Its douglas' male bits that get it first all the time, which is why they want to clean under his foreskin. Im so worried about him having the anaesthetic though. Will the bond between them be ok if Douglas is going to be 'under' for a while?

which one have they been treated with, anti's or penicilin? Vent disease is one of the rare times that penicilin is usually used as I have not heard of anything else being able to cure it:?

If Douglas is goin in for a GA, take Desmond along with him too;)

They have both had 2sessions of 3penicillin injections.

Had a message on my phone today to say that the vet is off sick. i don't trust a locum to do it, so will have to book in for next week and hope it doesn't come back aggressively again. I have been managing to clean under his foreskin with cooled boiled water using a cotton bud. He lets me retract it - not his favourite past time but hey ho- these things have to be done!!!

Hey ho - good for you!

I hope Douglas manages to shake off the syphilis for good this time.

Herbie suffered with it last year but thankfully only his face was involved. Touch wood he has been OK since.

Best wishes,
Vanessa xx

will give you the number for my vet if you want , he is the rabbit god of vets and will talk to you over the phone if you just want a second opinion

I think it might be worth investing in a culture test to try and discover the origine of the problem as 'auto immune disease' also presents the same symptoms at vent disease. Auto immune disease is very rare but does'nt mean to say it doesn't exist. Allergy (atopu) is another that presents the same symtoms so might be worth asking your vet about testing for vaious disease's:)

I know when we thought nLucy my french Lop had sphylliss the lab where we sent the swabs off to said that a scrape of the area would be better. Hope it sorts itself out soon.

Thanks for all your ideas. Will suggest them to vet. Unfortunately, she is off sick, and I cannot see her until the 25th March. There is other vets available, but i trust her more than the others.
