Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Blood from ear.

Hi,

Just looking for some opinions.... I have a medium sized lop buck who has dental issues. He has a a very poor jaw bone and had to have two molars removed (they actually just fell out under GA for a dental). He was a foster I took in and subsequently kept when it turned out he had issues...that and the fact he got on very well with one of my permanent rabbits.

Anyway, over the last six months I have occassionally found small droplets of blood on the summerhouse floor (in which he and his partner live free range) and after searching every part of both of them I could not find where it was coming from. It only happened about five times over this period but was confusing and worrying. I mentioned it to the vet who checked him over and could also find no wounds, broken nails etc and I was concerned it was maybe coming from his mouth but he has never had any trauma inside of his mouth..

so during today there has been more bleeding and this time it is evident where it is coming from. My poor boy has dried blood at the base and on one of his ears and when I looked inside there is quite a bit of dried blood. Other than than his ear looks clean i.e free from mites and the other ear is as clean as a whistle. He is showing no signs of EC which I know could also be a cause, and I was thinking maybe he is somehow scratching himself but he must be doing so deeply, and something must be irritating him. Does anyone have any other suggestions?? I have spoken to my vet tonight and since he is going in on Wednesday for a dental she is happy for him to wait until then unless he shows any signs of head tilt or if he seems unwell. (he is eating/drinking/acting normally)

I'm sorry I can't help. If it is the nail causing this, the first thing I would do is to cut / trim the nail to as dull as possible and observe for the next week or so to see if there is any futher blood spots
