The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. My Sophie's got chronic diarrhoea

henridoodle

Hi guys,

My beautiful rescue Sophie (whom i rescued 3 yrs ago) has got the most pungent smelling diarrhoea today & looks so deflated & ill - i knew something was wrong because she always runs upto me for her food & cuddles & today she just lay in the garden motionless. i haven't given her any pellets or veg today - only timothy hay & entrodex in her water (also syringed some into her) Obviously if she is still like this tomorrow am i will take her to the vet - would really appreciate knowing what else i could possibly do for her this evening & what could have caused this upset tum?? Her tum isn't swollen or gurgling, but her pupils are rather dilated & she is so lethargic - any ideas please would be so appreciated - i love her to bits

many thanks guys,

amanda x

if she was in the garden today (or yesterday) could she have had access to any spring bulbs or other plants?

Spring bulbs (even the eaves of) can cause this.

Sorry to hear about Sophie. I have not had this problem, but I would think keeping her warm is important. Has she eaten the hay at all? Getting fluids into her is good. Could she have eaten something in the garden that has upset her tummy? My boys have had quite soft poos recently because of the grass and new shoots.

I am sure someone will come on with some better advice. Good luck.

Tina

Thanks for your replies guys - she has her own special garden enclosure which is free from bulbs etc - only has grass - although i have just been out to her again (she is so lively now - thank goodness) & she has burrowed under the shed - so i am thinking maybe she has eaten something under there? Still runny smelly diarrhoea on the ground.

Yes - could well be something under the shed she has found. Old bulbs etc stick around for literally years and will be part eaten as part of any burrowing.

The other possibility is that something blew into the run area in the winds the other night - even an excess of leaves can cause an upset if the bun is not used to it. I had that when I was pruning and had to leave for a short while and came back to find some very round buns and a smaller pile of buddliea prunings! Our lawn was covered in leaves and bits after last night.
