There is a sad story behind this bunny, but not sure if I am allowed to post it :(

Is it an RSPCA cruelty case and is the rabbit being held at the veterinary practice?

I can probably take her if you get desperate.

Are her only problems runny eyes (possibly teeth?) and mites/fleas?

Do you have any more info?

Cheers

I know this is probably obvious to everyone.... but please be careful about quarantine when taking in a poorly buns..especially one with fleas and mites.

I'm thinking of the Myrtle story here:cry:

It did cross my mind Jill...but if she's at a veterinary surgery I bet the fleas will be gone by the time she's re-homed.

Hi

Yes, very sad story, this rabbit and her friend were abandoned (along with other animals too) when their owners moved house, the new owners discovered them in a barn when they moved in. They were then put up free to a good home and taken by a lady as pets for her toddler-age twins, thankfully she bought them straight to us. The companion had to be pts immediately. The lady with the toddlers then came to her senses about having pet rabbits for such young children, and the practice has custody of the remaining rabbit now, unfortunately none of us can take her ourselves now (already homed 4 stray buns between us!) and this girl needs experienced help so I'd rather she went through a rescue than I rehomed her direct.

We have her at the practice now, she's in poor condition (feels like a rabbit that used to be fat that lost weight quickly) fleas & mites & dacryocystitis. She is an RSPCA cruelty case but as the original owners now live abroad the RSPCA has said they cannot prosecute, and the local RSPCA home is full, can't take her, she would be pts, unfortunately our other local rescues are full too.

Parasites are already being treated, I'm not on this weekend she's being cared for by the duty nurse, I'll reassess her in the morning.

If anyone can help at all please get in touch, either through here or phoning the practice tomorrow, 01633 619971 8.30am-7pm ask for Emma. Just noticed I have some pms so I'll go and check those too!

I take it that anyone who who is willing to take her then that the RSPCA will pay for her treatment, I just thought I would ask in case people or rescues think they have to foot the bills

Poor little girl :cry: I am looking for a female bun to go with my 2 Frenchies now and I live just outside of Newport. Have had buns for over 20 years. However, due to financial reasons and lots of permanently sick rats needing expensive meds I cannot afford to take on a bun with a huge vet bill attached. Would there be any kind of help towards her treatment ?

We have space and good veterinary back up if she could be got to us.
I just hope sudden weight loss hasn't caused permanent liver damage.

Unfortunately no there is not any financial help available towards her care, she has already used the RSPCA emergency £60, unless anyone knows of any other charity vet funds available for ownerless rabbits.

To add to her problems, after examining her myself now, she has fairly bad arthritis in her knees, but gets around ok. I suspect she is older. She is eating and pooing well here and very affectionate.

Is anyone able to help with transport any part of the way between Newport and Twickenham?

Do you mean the RSPCA wont cough up more than £60 per rabbit for treatment?

If so thats abhorrent.

The RSPCA will give up to £60 per stray animal we log with them for emergency treatment only, although I did find out today for some reason our limit for this rabbit was £45....we've stopped putting charges on the account now but the practice has spent over £90 on her so far anyway.

She's doing ok today had a few soft poops but eating pellets & hay well.

Emergency treatment allows vets £60 initially. After that they have to seek funds from the local branch. £60 is there for stray animals that are injured and all wildlife. I think it is a very good fund to have available and I don't feel it's appropriate to criticise it when you consider the scale of this fund nationwide. What is abhorrent, is the vets that charge £60 to look the animal over and give a single injection. They milk the fund for all it is worth, I have seen this happen many times.

Can I just please request if anyone wants to debate this to take it to a seperate thread, as I could easily take the above as a personal criticism and I just want to find this bunny a good home!

Hi Emma.

Helen here.

Just got back home from dropping the gorgeous bun at Donna's, ARC in Twickenham.

She travelled really well. When Ange and we met at J16 of the M4 we swopped her from the carrier into an indoor hutch. She was very chipper and was investigated everything thoroughly before we set off. She had a big drink from a bowl and had some hay and then we set off.

We arrived ARC before 5 and she is now indoors with Donna and family with the indoor hutch for a base and the run of the house (lucky lady - lovely home!).

I think she is going to do really well as she has such spirit. I hope to be able to see her again before she goes to her new forever home, when she is over the worst of her problems.

Well done to you for making such a difference in her life already. I am just so pleased to have helped a teeny bit and to have been given the chance to have a cuddle with her and to meet Ange and Donna.

Helen x

What a trooper! She is absolutely unfazed by her move. Tucking into her hay like a good un.
She's met all my dogs now and hasn't batted an eye lid. With an attitude like that I'm sure she'll make a full recovery very quickly.
Thanks so much to everyone that's rallied round for her. I'll try to get photos but it's not my strong point! x
PS Anyone know if she's had her meds this morning?

Yup she had meds this morning :)

Great to hear she travelled ok! She does have an amazing personality, I'm convinced thats how she got through her ordeal, just by being so plucky.

I miss her!! I promised I wouldn't get attached.

Thankyou so much everyone.

I believe that she was given a name while she was with Emma but I think that she might be getting herself another name - probably something a bit Welsh in the not too distant.........

Hi All
Glad to hear bun travelled well and settled well. She almost didnt go at all as she settled so well in our house after Emma dropped her off. She did do lots of lovely poops before we set off so maybe she just doesnt go whilst travelling.

She is a lovable girl with lots of character and I know that now she has gone to Donna she will end up with a lovely forever home in the future. She certainly deserves it. She was only with me for a short while and has certainly tugged at my heart strings!

Good luck lovely bun - will be keeping a track on your progress. Cant wait to find out what your name will be - whilst with me you were Missy Mops but you would suit a lovely girlie name.

Was lovely to feel I played a part in this, although it was a very small one. It was also great to have met Emma, Helen and David in to the bargain.

Ange xx

Madmoo's had an idea - how about suggesting names for £1 each, then we can pick one out of the hat. Any money would go towards her care.

Photos will have to wait till kids get home - I can give injections and administer anaesthetics but NOT put photos on here! x

What do you think would be the best way to do this? Pm me your suggested name and I'll pm my address or should the names be public on here?

The Duchess

Hi Donna.

Firstly, nice fundraising idea - well done Ange.

hope you have a veto if the one you draw out of the hat is something like Squidgy or Squishy or similar (no offence if anyone on here's bun is called either of those two names) - because despite being very cuddly, I can't quite see you calling "Squidgy" when she needs to come for her tea! She's more your proper named bun I think.

Publishing the names on here might prevent duplication......

Hope she's flopped out in her lovely temporary new home...

Helen

Right, sorted!
I am starting a new thread on fundraising for this.
Put your name on public view and I will PM you my address and Janice's pay pal account then you can choose how to pay.
I'm afraid i was already in bed before my eldest two got home so still no new piccies - Janice, you busy, want to come and take some?
