My bunny story

usagibunny

Young Bun
The lady at the place I'm volunteering at encouraged me to write a story on how a bunny isn't "just a rabbit" for their newsletter. I'm a pretty good writer, but still nervous about the whole situation. Anyway, here is the story. Please tell me what you think...

Its just a rabbit

I hear this statement all too often "It's just a rabbit". These are the
same people who think rabbits don't have unique personalities and are
"boring".

That attitude is completely wrong. Rabbits have wonderful personalities
and they are unique little individuals.

When you take a bunny into your life you are taking on a great
responsibility. It really takes some effort to properly care for a
rabbit, but with that effort comes reward.

So why isn't it "just a rabbit"?

I have had my bunny, Usagi, for nearly 7 years now, and for about the
first year of her life I had the "she's just a rabbit" attitude. She
didn't get much attention, and for exercise she was kept outside in a
pen. She would grunt whenever you tried to touch her and she just had a
general dislike of people.

It could have gone on like that, but something changed. I fell into a
deep depression, and my bunny went from "just a rabbit" to my best
friend. She was there to comfort me when nobody else could. She would
give me bunny kisses and lay beside me while I read. She became a
constant companion.

I became so intrigued by this little creature, who was formerly "just a
rabbit" that I had to know more about bunnies. I started reading all
about rabbits, and so began my journey into becoming the bunny lover I
am today.

Having a house rabbit has been a very rewarding and educational
experience for me. I never would have guessed such a diminutive
creature could be so loving.

My bunny is constantly running around my feet, she will follow me
anywhere! She also comes when she's called (when she feels like it).
My favorite thing is when we are lying on the floor watching TV
together. We can sit there for
quite a long time. Petting her relaxes me so much I find myself falling
asleep sometimes!

This little bunny has definitely had a positive impact on my life. I
could have easily continued to ignore her, like so many uneducated bunny
owners tend to do. Instead, I got to know a wonderful little creature,
and I wouldn't change anything for the world.

I will always regret that year I didn't get to know her, but she has
shown me that she's moved on. Who knew love like this could come in
such a small package?

So, for anybody who has an aggressive or "boring" rabbit, I would tell
you that you need to get to know your rabbit. Spend time with it, take
it out of the cage, let it run around the house (supervised, of
course). It could take time to undo the damage that has been done, but
once you feel the love of your bunny you'll understand it is one of the
best feelings in the world.

If you don't have a bunny and would like to get to know one, I would
suggest adopting a bunny. Not only are you helping save a life, you are
also getting a friend out of the deal. A bunny may not be like a dog or
a cat, but I can tell you this, no bunny is "just a rabbit".

Thanks for reading. What do you think? Good story? Newsletter worthy?

that was good, maybe if more people read it fewer bunnies would be neglected. I like how you admitted that you had that attitude at first but the rabbit changed it for you because other people will be able to relate to that. well done

thats really good!! you should be proud of it and hope it can change some people's minds about their rabbits. definately newsletter worthy - well done. x

I also think it is really good - a personal story is great and I like the way you point out that you have to put effort in (get to know your rabbit, give it a good environment) and you get LOADS out of it.

The only comment I would make would be to shorten the introduction - as soon as you get into the 'this is my story' bit, I think that people will be gripped and read on, but I think that people who aren't that interested in rabbits in the first place won't be 'grabbed' by the general statements at the beginning, and it would be a real shame if they didn't read the rest because of it. What I would do would be to start with:

I hear this statement all too often "It's just a rabbit. Rabbits are boring". I think that this attitude is completely wrong - so why isn't it "just a rabbit"?

(ie, a shortened version of your introduction)
Then keep your main story and your ending as they are - they are brilliant.

Those are my thoughts, but also, well done for doing this - I think that your story is exactly what people need and it is very good.

Oh that is brilliant!! :D

Very well written, clean and to the point. What a lovely story too, very honest of you with such a lovely outcome, was very almost a tear jerker!

*Applause* :D

Thanks for reading, and for all of the positive feedback. I'm going to go ahead and send it and hope for the best.
