After writing to the Charities Commission about my concerns; I got the following reply today

I am writing following my email to you of 13 February 2008 to advise you of the outcome of our assessment of your complaint about the above named charity.

We have contacted the charity and have requested details of their policy and procedures for managing potential conflicts of interest and an explanation as to why expenditure in the financial year ending 31 March 2007 is low compared with the level of income.

The Commission will not become involved in the matters regarding the presentation of the charity within the Pets At Home Limited stores as this a matter between the charity and the company stores to resolve and not one that the Commission would become involved in. We have however asked the charity to comment on this matter and whether they are aware of any problems and any action they are taking.

Having considered all the information provided we have concluded from our assessment that no formal intervention is necessary. We are satisfied that the charity has appropriate policies, guidelines and procedures in place to manage the potential conflicts of interest of the trustees and their roles and responsibilities as directors and employees of the Pets At Home Limited company.

The charity reports that no donations were made during the financial year ending 31 March 2007 due the charity developing its criteria and application processes for granting funds to others. They also advise us that they wished to raise funds for a rabbit neutering programme. They confirm that applications are now being received and considered and grants are being made in the current financial year. We are therefore satisfied with the explanations given and that funds raised are now being expended.

With regard to the matter of the presentation of the charity within the Pets At Home stores the charity say they are aware that in some instances members of the public have been confused between the animals which are available for adoption and those animals which are for sale. They say new systems have been introduced for the support adoption programme including clearly marked adoption centres, new procedures for the recording of animals for adoption and transfer to members of the public and in store training for store staff on these systems and procedures. They add that the scheme is in its infancy and any issues that arise through the support adoption programme are monitored by a dedicated individual in the charity who reports such matters to the trustees. As mentioned above the Commission will not become involved in such matters as this is a matter between the charity and Pets At Home Limited stores to resolve and not for the Commission.

Having concluded from our assessment that no formal intervention is necessary there is not further action for us to take and we are closing our case files.

Rabbit Welfare Association

Sorry it did not state the charity, simply the Pet's at Home company and I wasn't sure if RWA had done any promotional work in P@H stores and there was a query with the RWA recently regarding assets, although this clearly states nothing about assets!

Confusion

I think it means that the Charity made no "grants" during 2007 even though they raised money during that time :?
