How can I organise a fun run?

karen1980

Mama Doe
Has anyone got any ideas of how to organise a fun run?
Its an idea to raise fund for the rescue I volunteer for but I have no idea how to organise it and whats needed?

Can we just organise it ourselves and mark out a route or do we need official run marking people and first aid etc???

The plan is for the rescue volunteers to run and family OH etc.. ?

Any advice would be appreciated as im really keen on the idea!!

Thanks

Karen

It depends on whether you would be running on the roads I would guess as to whether you need marshalls. Is there a Park or something near you that you could run round? If you print maps of the route then you shouldn't really need markers I shouldn't think, after all if its just a fun run it doesn't matter so much if people run the wrong way!!

I guess if you put posters up/send flyers out to get some interest in the local area. Then provide sponsorship forms if thats how you are doing it or you could have an entry fee. You might need to get permission from the landowner if you are running across fields or through national parks etc.

There may be people who want to be involved but can't walk very far/run so they could be your marshalls etc. It might be an idea to have someone who can do basic first aid but if you advertise that there will be no first aid facilities and that poeple are running at their own risk then I guess that covers you.

Where abouts in the country are you?

I'm not sure what you need to do, but a few things I would look into are... do you need public liability insurance or even an events insurance if the run is to be open to the public, do you need first aiders or an ambulance, do you need to inform the police/local authority...

Perhaps you could find another established fun run and contact the organisers for advise?

Do you have a community police officer in your area? The one where I live was really helpful in providing a (free) police escort for a guide& scout parade, which slowed down traffic and made it safe for us. He/she would probably also be able to tell you what rules apply re fun runs.
You could also contact your local councillor or MP -they would give you advice on the rules re safety, first aid, if insurance needed etc and may even raise the profile for your charity by attending /opening the event. (They like to be seen to be doing things for their community).
You could also invite the local press.
Good luck -Sue:wave:

How about getting a group of people together and entering an existing one? Then it would just cost the entry fee and you can raise good money from sponsorship.

You would need first aid (st Johns ambulance)
Toilet facilities
refreshments
pa system

off the top of my head.

Thanks everyone and sorry Lisa!!

Im looking at existing ones as they might be easier to do!
The running will be hard enough without the organising!:lol:
