Thanks Jane - bit nervous as I didn't want people to think I was rubbing breeding in their faces!

I don't have access to many pictures at work obviously but once I get home this evening I'll dig through my files and see what I can come up with! :D :D

Hiya,

Rabbits United is a forum for ALL bunny lovers alike... Not just for rescue buns.

Breeders are welcome on RU - as are the pictures of their bunnies.

We want breeders to be aware of this and know that they will always be welcome on RU :D

They weigh 8 1/2lb when adult - about the size of your average cat.

Their characters are FANTASTIC, they are a naturally friendly inquisitive breed and so much fun. I've had them over 10 years and can't imagine being without them. :D

I am trying to specialise in Agouti Butterfly but trying to breed a well marked one is proving to be a bit of a nightmare! I have a 12 week old doe at home who is the first perfectly marked baby I've bred since her mother 3 years ago! But yes Agouti is the other colour I specialise in.

They don't get as big as French Lops, they're the next size down as it were. Alot of the German Lop pets I sell go to be bonded with French lops though as they're not too dissimilar in size.

I ADORE Agoutis. My fave is the 'all over Agouti' ( s'cuse non technical term !!)

I think my late, great Gordon Bennet was mostly German Lop. But perhaps just a bit on the small side.

Do they have big litters? When I had my nightmare mishap with a still fertile post castration Buck (Seamus) many years ago the Doe (Beatrice ) had 8 Babies :shock: I am still in counselling to cope with the shock

Another genetics question here......sorry ..... Seamus was a Castor Rex and Bea a Black Otter. She had 4 Black Otter kits and 4 Castors. Is that what would be expected with a Black Otter/Castor Mating ?

* Dont worry folks, I am NOT thinking of repeating the experience, just curious as to how all this gene stuff works !! *

Awwwww...I love german lops

I have Herman and he's soooo scrummy. He won over my o/h completely and is my o/h's ultimate favourite. Herman has the loveliest, soppiest nature and is just a real cuddle bun. He needs a girlie fwiend soon as he has been moved outdoors now and needs a fwiend to cuddle up to. He is so chilled out :D

I have had a litter of 9 once  and used to regulary get litters of 7. Thankfully my litter sizes have dropepd and litters of 4 or 5 are more common - thats the best sized litter as it means theres more milk to go round so bigger babies.

Agouti is the most dominant colour so your caster must have been bred from either otter (or possibly self :?) and carrying the genes for you to have had otter babies.

Hi WalnutEarth:wave:

I have always loved agouti buns after finding my beautiful wildie bun, Harvey, laying injured in the road and nursing him back to health.

Herman was an ex-breeding buck. He was no longer wanted by a girl up the line and I took him in...I love him to bits. Apparently he originally came from a man who imported him from Holland, then he went to another lady and then to me where he will stay forever  My o/h has never really paid an interest in the bunnies until Herman came along. He loves Herman and makes
a constant fuss over him which Hermie soaks up. He is soooo cool and nothing phases him. His favourite past times are sleeping and eating and then eating and sleeping ...with his legs stretched out the back. Geman lops rule and I'm definately a huge fan :D He will need a girliefwiend soon as his wendy house is nearly ready and he will need a companion to cuddle up to.

Are they as a breed known for being so chilled out? Those chubby faces are sooooo cute!!!

Hi Nicola,

Yes they are an incredibly chilled out and relaxed breed, one of my friends that comes round always makes me bring one in for a run round and can't believe that they're happy to hop round the room before settling on the floor by my feet. Would have quite liked to move one of my retired breeding does in pernamently but unfortunately her house manners aren't quite up to scratch  its sort of a 'hop and poo and hop and poo' and my OH would have gone mad! LOL

Indeed its the chubby faces that win you over, they're just like a teddy bear!

WalnutEarth, what is the expected lifespan of a German Lop ? My oldest Frenchie made it to 5 1/2 and Bigwig has just turned 5 this month. I think Harvey is a Greman Lop cross ... he is 5-6 years now and is beginning to show signs of ageing.

WalnutEarth626
22-02-2008, 02:47 PM
I've been very unlucky with mine and not had one make it past 5 1/2, but then these only been a handful that I keep until that sort of age so possibly not a fair review. I know someone that has a pet German from me that is over 7 years old and have friends that have had 9 year olds hopping about. Between 6 and 8 seems a reasonable age.

Aww no worries Kay - I saw you having trouble tracking down a rescue bun so thought I'd see if I could help, just a shame we couldn't get her to you. Still as long as Simba has a wifeybun to snuggle with and is happy thats the most important thing :)
