  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What do you use to de-flea your bunnies?

... just curious.
I was checking my de flea supply stuff for bunnies, .. not sure of the name, I'll look in a minute.. But it's specifically designed for small animals, and has enough for one application. It lasts four weeks... Do other people use stuff that lasts longer...? I never realised it had so short a working span... Or is this normal for flea protection stuff?

Yes thats a normal timescale for flea treatments, they range from 1 week(petshop cheap stuff) to 4 - 6 weeks.

I use advantage for the rabbits but ONLY when/if I actually see a flea on a bun.
My dog and cats are routinely flea treated every 6 - 8 weeks with Frontline spot on depending on the time of year and heating.

Yea, we de flea out cats with frontline frequently, because our female cat reacts badly to just one flea bite... ^^
I was planning on having some major grooming session with the bunnies this weekend, as they're all moulting and some nails need trimming, so thought I'd de-flea at the same time... But I only have two de-fleat thingies, and I now have four bunnies, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow.

There have been problems with some batches of Xenex too.:( We frontline combo our cats, so only do the indoor buns if we see anything on them. The outdoor ones will be done with a 4 weekly spot on, that I've just bought. Not used it before, so can't recommend (or otherwise ) at the moment.

We used Advantage and it was good. Just need to remember that while cats get dosed with Advantage 1 time per month (I think), rabbits need the same dose 1 time per week. Not sure why exactly, but it says so right on the pack. So guess reading the directions is ideal!

We treated our buns twice (so 2 weeks worth).

Make sure you get the right pack for the weight of your bun.
