  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is this normal?

Yesterday as some of you will know i was really worried about lilly as she stopped eating and pooing.

shes fine now, but she won't touch her pellets... she is eating lots of hay however... is it normal for a bun who has had a tummy prob to just eat hay for a while? shes really bright!!

Hmmm thats a strange one but I think the answer is yes. One of my boys has just recovered from a 2 day ordeal of stasis. The first thing he wanted to eat was hay. After that he also ate some carrots and dandelions. I think becuase pellets are so dry, they might feel a little rough on bunny's tummy. If she is pooing again your worries are over.

Thats excellent news. Keep her well hydrated and give her a little extra in moist foods for the rest of the week. I'd still leave pellets out for her so that she has the choice. Some rabbits go right off certain foods after illnesses (perhaps believeing them to be the cuase of illness) and never eat them again. As long as its not hay, she'll be fine. There are rabbits who are kept exclusively on hay and water diets and seem to be very healthy.

Its not unusual no, and its a good thing.

Cut back on the sweet foods though ;) Rabbits guts are not geared up for a high carbohydrate diet, they dont process it well.
