  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Smokey's Eye

OH and I went out to feed the buns last night, and I noticed that Smokeys left eye was closed. We brought him in and I put some of my contact lens solution on a cotton wall pad and wiped the eye. There was a dirty mark on the cotton wool where I had done it and few gritty bits.

As soon as I had done this, the eye was open and (seemed) fine again.

I went out to feed them this morning and brought him in again for another eye check and it looks as though there was never anything wrong with it - wide open and clear! I wiped it again anyway.

Obviously I will keep my eye (sorry about the pun) on this, but does anyone have any idea what this could have been and could it be the start of long term problems?

Should I take him to the vet for a checkup regardless?? He is eating fine and pooing/weeing fine.

He is currently at the end of his 5th week of a panacur course for suspected EC infection (although he has never shown any symptoms, it was just a precaution).

Thanks

If its clear and free from discharge/swelling/redness then keep an eye on it, most likely it was irritated by a foreign body but there are numerous other causes of eye inflammation which do need veterinary interevention.
