View Full Version : Is Arthur's hutch too small?
Does Arthur look too big for his hutch? Its 5ft x 2.5ft x 2.5ft, I doubt I can get a partner for him in here. He doesn't spend a long time in here but I don't want his life to be tainted at all. Any comments welcome please.
He always slept in the hay box and used the 'bedroom' as a big toilet so I ripped the divide out to give him more room.

The blue sheeting is just there to protect the hutch whilst the roof is off.

How long does he actually spend locked in there and where is he when he isn't :)
Do you have room to attached a permanent run? That's the easiest way to give bunnies more space :)

I dont think it looks small for him :D could you maybe attach a large run onto it to give him more room, and would make more room for a friend :D
Hiya, at the moment he is out 6 to 7 hours a day free range round the garden with supervision.

He then spends the rest of the day in his 10ft x 6ft run but he gets put away at 9pm till 7am. He isn't out 24hours because I am worried about weasels and ferrets as we are pretty rural.
Every other week he is out all day as my partner works one week on one week off all year (lucky so and so).
Cheers
I have been wondering about getting another hutch the same size and making a 2 story with ramp?

I think he sounds a pretty lucky bunny to have garden access and a larger run than most!
I guess for two bunnies a larger hutch may be better but I am not sure how easy it would be to 'extend' your current hutch.
How about a shed? You may find a 6x4 shed is no more expensive than a hutch.
Good luck if you decide to find him a friend!

I think that sounds really good. He gets lots of time out of it. Could you attach the run to make it secure? Then he could come and go as he pleased. I think a 5 X 2 hutch is fine for two rabbits for overnight. My two house buns are in a 48inch dog crate and get shut in at night and I know others do the same. :)

i wouldnt think its too small given the amount of 'out' time your bunny gets.....:) seems a lucky chappie to me. relax! ;)
Phew, thanks everyone. I don't want to seem OTT but he means the world to me and I just want to keep him happy. He does get alot of out time and always has the option of going back in the hutch, I suppose I worry about the rainy days when he just sits in his hutch all huddled and bored looking. He is very good at looking bored! lol

Alvins free time is spent under the sofa (which is smaller than the cage), i dont think anyone told bunnies they need hours and hours of exercise a day.... your bunny is gorgeous
I think most bunnies spend a great deal of time at looking bored. It's called "lounging" :)

I think the fact he gets so much out time is great and the run size is brilliant. Like you say though it's the rainy days that can be problematic as he is confined to his hutch. If you could get a run attached to his hutch you can actually get custom made run covers so he could still get out for exercise from the hutch even on rainy days:D

I'd like if you can predator proof the hutch you could probably do the same to the run. The easiest way is to put a second layer of mesh on over the other - you'd need to check how fine it needed to be for weasles etc. It's pretty easy to fit you can use a stapler or U shaped nails :)

Good point Tasmin. I'd never even though of doing that!
Thanks Donnamt he is my gorgeous fella! lol

Your hutch is a good size. The recommended minimum size for a pair is 6ft x 2ft, so yours is roughly the same size (just different length/depth ratio).
I say get another rabbit :thumb:

i think your setup looks awesome and it wouldnt hurt to get another bun to keep him company - prvoded the new bun wasnt a giant or anything. ;) although obviously if you particularly want to extend his hutch, go for it. :D

I think his hutch is fine for him and a friend - I would also attach a permanent run for him though so he can go in that on nasty days. Mine spend most of their time in their run only retreating to their hutch on very bad days
