Can people advertise rabbits as easter rabbits!!!
I had a litter born last year on Valentines day but i didnt go advertising them as Valentines Buns! i just dont get it, it totally doesnt make a difference what time of year it is you either want a rabbit or not!
It makes me so angry breeders advertising easter rabbits how utterly stupid! they are really just dropping themselves in it!

i think its a novelty thing because they know they will sell because people asociate easter with cute fluffy animals.but this also gives proper breeders a bad name that have litters available around the same time.xxxxx

As soon as i have an enquiry on my buns if the words present, easter, birthday, little boy/girl are metioned DOWNNN goes the phone.
ive had ppl on my waiting list for 6mths now and there still waiting for me to have a bun ready for them this to me means they more than likely want the bun for keeps

yep.when i used breed french lops if people said it was for a child or easter i used tell them ring back in 3mths if still interested cuz wouldnt let them go to children for easter.know how much the novelty wears off.sold one to my 7yr old nextdoor neighbour(10yrs ago)and ive never seen a child so dedicated to that bunny.she lived for 8yrs as i know of,not sure if still alie now though.god i miss my frenchies.x:)

i think its appalling but its just sellers cashing in on public fads. i've seen a particular breeder off of here that had 5 planned litters that at 8 weeks old would coincide with the easter period. whats ironic is that they have posted in this thread!

It is so sad...because you just know that all or most of those bunnies sold will end up being 'old toys' kept in terrible conditions not suitable for bunnies, I spose the fortunate ones will end up in rescue centres, but then thats what everyone wants to stop, right?
Why isn't there a law now to prevent shops/garden centres selling bunnies..and guinea pigs, rats etc for that matter?

keeping on topic: Ok Easter bunnies are a gimmick they are appealing to the 'cute' aspect rather like puppies at Xmas it's a marketing thing....
I know this is a rabbit forum but in general I think there are many animals that were marketed as 'cute' then as soon as they grow up they are too much like hard work and 'forgotten'
I can remember explaining to someone the 'issues' people have with pet shops - their answer was 'Oh I didn't realise - why don't they stop selling them' ERRRR one word MONEY
The value of an animals life means nothing when money is involved true or not true

Although tbh I dont see how supplying Rabbits to Pet Shops is any better if its only *not* done at Easter.
I overheard a conversaton in one Pet Shop last week when they were actually discussing increasing their stock to 'get ready for the seasonal demand'. So again we get back to the obvious. If we, the customers, dont 'demand' the 'goods' the Pet Shops wont need to stock them. At Easter or at any other time.

As a breeder do you have methods of preventing that your rabbits aren't bought at easter on a whim? I know many rescues don't rehome at these times of the year specifically for this reason, do you have a similar strategy?

Our adopted bun Pepper was an Easter Bunnie last year bless him, I think she said the kids lost interest straight away, I have two kids but the decision to adopt a rabbit stopped at me as I know the commitment would have to be mine.
They do it because it's a prime time for their trade. Seems a bit obvious really. The statement made makes it seem as though some breeders aren't interested in money.... most seem to be motivated by that very reason, so why not? It's no worse than selling to the same people at any other time of year is it? The chances of them not wanting the rabbit after 3 months are the same if they are not questioning them or homechecking them. Accept the fact that some breeders out there are coining it in thanks to their little money making machines (rabbits).

Reading all this has sort of made us aware of the following. From about October up till easter ish most of the bunnies we re-home go as housebuns, pure and simple and very few as outdoor bunnies. Generally we have no reservations about re-homing, everybody seems to have carefully considered it, and genuinely wants a rabbit (s)as a close family pet who will become part of the family, much loved and cared for.
Easter seems to mark the beginning of what we refer to as "silly" season. You definitely notice a shift in the type of people after bunnies.
Weather getting better, children going out into the garden ,thoughts of rabbits in the garden pester pester pester and easter just seems to tie the whole feeling up into one neat package. You even notice rabbits being used in tv adverts more together with other advertising. Its become a subliminal thing that some people seem to have to "scratch". Its a bit like your easter will not be the real thing unless you have one, just like a real christmas tree at christmas.
We have found re-homing from about one month before easter and about october much more taxing and thinking about it we definitely approach each re-homing with more sceptisism as we are more aware of this spring summer thing.
Oh and of course there are those out there who will only be too happy to help you out with that itch........but at a price!

:( That Easter bunny story is so sad, but it must be so common  the ones that don't end up dead or in rescues will probably end up being ignored in a tiny cage at the bottom of the garden..
I just wanted to say to alexandrahickey that it's a great idea to put those flyers up in your shop, I understand you must get a lot of hassle for working for you know who, but you are in a position there to influence and educate people and you never know you could make some changes from the inside. Could you maybe send copies of the poster to head office to see if they could distribute them around their stores?? Might be an idea.. It is in the chain's best interests to have long-term customers, not someone who gets bored with the animal in a couple of months after all.

As anyone who has read my other threads will know: I am having 2 rabbits the week before Easter.
HOWEVER, I would like to make the following clear if I may (as it has just dawned on me that some may secretly suspect that I am getting them BECAUSE of Easter due to the timing:shock:):
1) I agreed to have these buns as the lady (who thought she had 2 girls) is known to me and was in a "tizz" about rehoming the babies. This agreement was made after discussion with my OH for some time about the possibility of us homing rabbits. Easter didn't even enter my head at that time - cross my heart and hope to die!
2) I am not paying anything for said buns so lady in question neither bred with intent or made any profit from these babies.
I 100% agree that rabbits most certainly shouldn't be marketed/bred as "Easter Bunnies" as it encourages people to obtain them on a whim. It is much the same as the "puppy for Christmas" scenario...:(
TP - who hopes she was never suspected as a whimsy Easter Bunny buyer ever.;)
