  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any advise please!!!!!

well i would only do small changes gradually. start with a small increase in the pellets you feed (or food if they not been changed over from a mix) then introduce little bits of veg. carrots are high in sugar and are more likely to cause fat but dont overfeed or ul get red wee(extra protien in it think) i would increase hay available and let them graze grass in a run in the garden. hope this helps.

I find a little porridge is the best way of building bunny weight - just soak a teaspoon of porridge oats into a little warm water...most bunnies absolutely love it! Also a slice of banana is good for this (in desperate situations I have been known to mash the banana into the porridge for a very tasty treat!)

As bunlover says though, you do need to be very gradual when adding anything new to a bun's diet as it can take their guts a couple of weeks to adjust to the new food and can cause serious problems if you change the diet too quickly.

Has the skinny bun seen a vet? It's always worth ruling out other problems associated with weight loss (e.g. an underlying infection such as snuffles, worms, dental issues etc) before going straight to fattening them up.
