View Full Version : Your House Rabbit's Setup Pictures?

As Starsky is *hopefully* soon to be a house rabbit, I'd really love to see some pictures of your house bunnies' set up. Is it best for rabbits to be on a hard flooring(no carpet) for easy clean-up? I can't imagine my mum's reaction to Starsky urinating all over the carpet

Depends on the size. A good friend of mine has just homed a giant breed and uses a dog crate. Having more then one floor will not do for big buns. The door is left open when they are around until he is litter trained and it will be open all the time. Otherwise his mostly free range.

I suppose with smaller buns you can make a cage using those NIC Grid things, and have more then one floor to save floor space.

Ooh i should've explained
Starsky is a Netherland Dwarf and will be living in one room of the house, of course with a cage. Thanks for the picture!

This was my old set up which worked really well as they had plenty of room when shut up overnight. Its too small for all day though without a pen attached.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n172/izatronic/cratesetup2.jpg

They are now free range in one room so they just have an underbed storage box underneath a coffee table which is full of hay and they sleep behind the sofa underneath the radiator, or flop out in front of the fire. Its a hard life

Regarding room flooring...hard flooring is easier to clear but some rabbits find it unnerving to walk on but I guess they'd get used to it.

Ooh that looks cozy :D
What I'm unsure about is that the cage I'll be using was originally used for rats, and so it has a wire flooring. Is there an inexpensive way of covering this up?

Not the best photo but this is one of my pair's set up, they're shut in overnight & the rest of the time they have the run of my room. The otehr pair have the run of the conservatory.

Ooh noo, I'm done on tiles :D I tried getting those for my rats and couldn't find them anywhere, so now I'm just fed up with those
The cage is a decent size for a rabbit's partial home. :)

Alvin and pearls home... ive made a few changes, the crate is now a 42" and ive made the pen enclosure slightly larger (total locked in size is 3.5 feet x 7 feet)..... the cat bed and vet bed now gone - pearl killed the cat bed and started chewing the vetbed, i now have an underbed storage box for the litter tray cus pearls a digger...lol

when opened up it blocks off access to the front door and ralphs dinner bowl other than that they have the whole downstairs when we are here to keep an eye on them :)

i would take a pic of it now but its half way thro being cleaned out

Well, it actually basically is the size of a dog crate; Even the first time my sister saw it when I recieved it for my rats, she said, 'That's a dog cage...'
I would post the link to it on Ebay for the picture but they don't seem to be selling it anymore; Or I'd take a picture of the cage itself but I'd have to fully assemble it.

Sasuke only has a run. He's too lazy to jump anyway and his old cage was driving me mad:lol: (Pet shop rabbit cage, made too much noise when he bounced around on the plastic floor:roll: Also he never left the cage, and I was worried he wasn't getting enough exercize.
Strangely now that he's got almost 6 times as much room all he wants is to get out more:lol:
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j12/ZakuraRabbit/Bur/P1010006-1.jpg
I used to have a carpet underneath, but took it away because he was chewing on it. He walks directly on the carpet floor anyway:lol:

Rat cage??

The vast majority of rat cages aren't big enough for rats let alone a bunny even if he is a nethie.
Plus wire flooring and bunnies is a bad idea as it hurts their feet and they can end up with sore hocks, sometimes they can even get feet caught in wire and break their legs. You can get self adhesive vinyl tiles and planks from B&Q, they're great plus they're cheap.

Don't worry about him peeing on the carpet as bunnies are very easy to litter train especially if you have a neutered rabbit. But hard floors are easier to clean if there are any accidents.

This is my set up,
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8318/dscf1099vx9.jpg
Though it now has a door, a divider to separate Otis and Nuggette whilst they're still whole bunnies. An extra litter tray up top instead of the plush bed. Vet bed on the carpet area, a tent downstairs with vet bed in, a play carrot patch. An extra food dish and water bottle, more hay racks, hanging hay balls. Rubber mats on the vinyl to stop buns from slipping.

Plus they spend over half their time out in the lounge separated by more grids from B&Q.

I wouldnt bet on them getting used to it - Muppet's had a year. Maybe he's just a slow learner  He does walk on it and will explore but obviously feels more comfy on rugs/carpet, especially if something spooks him and he wants to escape.

Though I suspect a 'textured' laminate would be fine. Mine is cheap/dead smooth [from previous owner].

This is where Muppet lives, in my dining room. The cage is open 24/7 (it's only 100cm) and I shut the dining room door at night or if I'm out. In theory he has the run of the dining room and kitchen but in practise he sticks to the rugs (out of shot). Lately he prefers to sleep on the door mat by the patio door. Nice n chilly

Things you cant see in the pic are his toys (incl a tube, cardboard castle, two digging boxes under the table). I cant actually use the dining table w/o a major clear-out!

I am aware that a lot of rat cages are too small for rats; but as I have said, this cage is the general size of a dog crate. If my mum is really in a good mood, I may be able to sell the cage(she's been wanting me to sell it for a while now) and buy a dog crate after she agrees to let me allow Starsky to be a house rabbit. If not, I may be able to use the hutch, although I don't really fancy that idea.

Wispa, that looks amazing!!

Starsky would have his own room, but with the cage inside it so that he can go in and out freely; Not sure if I said that already because if I didn't then that would explain a lot of confusion.

Our old rabbit Sharmi hated wooden floors. She was used to carpet so would avoid the wood at all costs. Her area was carpet so she was a little stranded on her carpet island. I guess it was ok because she was really old and not active anyway.

Our young buns (6 months) like sitting on carpet and concrete and tiles. They really haven't discovered their preference yet and will lounge on whatever.

I'll post pics later.

Well I've been told that a cage is their place where they can confine themself and feel safe; Which I thought was quite strange as I was expecting to just have him in a small room like a walk-in closet or summat as that seems to me safe enough...

Maddie's cage the day I built it, I don't have any updated pictures of it, it's still the same shape anyway.

Personally, I wouldn't want to go much smaller than this for a cage. I used to have her in a dog crate, I didn't like it at all though, so got my NIC grids after months of waiting, lol. Readily available now though. ;)

I think a rat cage wouldn't be appropriate at all I'm afraid. Is it a wire style cage or one with a plastic base? Do you know what it was called? I'd also steer well clear of "Rabbit Cages" that they sell in pet shops. "Glorified litter trays", is the best way I've heard them described.

I would never buy a specified rabbit cage from a pet shop  I didn't even get the rat cage from a pet shop. It has a green metal base but a wire floor on top of that. I'll just either not use a cage, or sell the rat cage and use those glorious NIC grids which I have never seen before. :D Are they easy to put together?

Ive just ordered her a pink dog crate tho because she keeps tipping her water bowl over and we need to go back to a bottle. Its not the cleaning that bothers me, more that if she does it while im out she wont have any water...im hoping it will keep her hay contained a bit more too

I really really REALLY don't understand why she's so reluctant to talk about anything to do with rabbits; I bring up neutering and she flips out. I bring up being a house rabbit and she flips out. It makes my head want to explode.

Really though, I keep hearing about you 14/15 year olds with mum's that want to help out and actually care about the rabbit's wellbeing, and I get full of envy, because that couldn't happen in a million years with my mum. I don't know; my sister loves animals but not in the same *sense* that I do, as she finds that they are only pets, but couldn't believe that they can be the most wonderful member of your family, or your best friend. She says that they don't have feelings; i.e. they don't feel grief or happiness or anything like that.

I mean this in the very worst sense that my family is just terribly different from any other family. Not just petwise, either.

I end up crying most of the time because my mum just doesn't care and always gets so upset even if I tell her that Starsky needs to be neutered; she says, 'I haven't got the money for it!!' even though she KNOWS that I've got my own money in my bank account which she's decided to not let me use, although I don't get any other money because she's cut off everyone's pocket money and it's been like that for about 7 months, so my pocket money throughout all that being saved WOULD have added up to £140, which is more than enough for neutering.

I really just want to die when she reacts like this, even though that's every single time I bring it up.

I know how you feel.
I admit my mum has done alot for my rabbits which I am truely greatful for, she made me feel terribly guilty whilst she did it. I felt terrible asking my mum for the rabbit sheds and a new run and a new hutch but I knew that's what my rabbits needed so I continued to tell her how small my hutches were etc and she finally gave ina dn let me buy three sheds for my animals. But when they came she was so excited and designed the layout of the sheds for me
She was reluctant about me vaccinating them util I told her about the mxyi break out in our village and after a very painful day of me begging she agreed to take me and my friend's rabbit to the vet to get their vaccinations.
She also doesn't like paying money out for their food, she seems to think SS is very expensive (and TBH it is where we buy it from) and she always tries to get me to feed them russle rabbit or wagg bunny brunch instead, but i just tell her about how bad they are and she buys SS but is very mardy about it.

When I talk to her about house rabbits she goes mad

these days i would always recommend a dog crate to anyone whow as wantinga n indoor hutch/hutch fro in teh conservatory/garage/shed, and could provide the buns with room to roam freely throughout the day/night.

we are planning on gettinga notehr dog crate when we have a hosue bun,a nd will place taht in teh utility roomn, which teh bun (as tehre are no wires to nibble!) will have free run of.

This is Winston and Snowdrop's old set-up. The large green litter tray is the base of a 120cm indoor cage.

This is my set up in the dining room for my two. They are in the hutch/run when I'm at work and overnight. The rest of the time they have run of the house. It's on a brick floor which they seem fine with but I've seen them skate all over the place on laminate so guess it depends in what sort of hard floor you have.

I know some people think hutches are ugly indoors but I quite like it!

These all look so wonderful! My only issue is that my mum is still reluctant, and we wont be moving for quite a long time. However I will be getting another rabbit soon, and don't know where to put the rabbit until Starsky and her have bonded completely and can go in together, because I can't use the rats cage; Unless I blocked off the run for Starsky and put the rabbit in there with a lot of hay and such to cover up the floor and make it a bunny-like home, but that would be awkward to do.... Although as I type this it seems like a good idea more and more.

It's a one-level hutch with an underrun which he has just recently gotten access to. But the thing is I'm not completely sure that my mum will *let* me let Starsky become a house rabbit, and we probably won't be moving for a good year at least, and Starsky is always really lonely.

I sound like such a bad rabbit mummy.:(

How big is the hutch/run though? To be honest, I think your best option would be to save hard & get some new housing suitable for two bunnies (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Massive-Rabbit-Hutch-Run-Combo-6ftx2ftx2ft-hutch-6x4run_W0QQitemZ350022005034QQihZ022QQcategoryZ635 13QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) so that the bun you have now is happy, and some toys perhaps so that he doesnt need a friend straight away but wont be bored (www.pamperedpiggies.co.uk) and then once you have him all happy, talk to your Mum about getting him a friend Xx

It sounds like a critter? My critter has a green base and wire floor on top of that? Im sorry but I wouldnt dream of putting any of my rabbits in a rat cage :( They arent big enough x

If any of you ever met my mum you would realise how much of a tough cookie she is. I don't think there is any way on earth she would let me get Starsky a new hutch; Although I continue to daydream about Starsky actually becoming a house rabbit, because I really am confident I'll be able to persuade my mother... She is very difficult to get through, but if I try so hard to persuade her, she can sometimes break, which is what happened with my rats; I showed her how much I was willing to work for it, so eventually she let me get them.
I've just learned that I'll most likely be moving in the summer. Heck, probably even holding off getting another rabbit will be helpful for Mum.

You had a critter too didnt you hun :D I feel its to small for my rats and they do nothing but sleep  I really wouldnt recommend putting a rabbit in one of these cages. Is your bunny ever going to be shut in the cage, say overnight or when your not home? If its only a base you want and your bun will be free range in the room all the time I would put a litter tray in the corner of the room and a cardboard box for hiding x

Sure you can't just do what I did?
Sasuke used to be living in a small plastic cage until I got a sudden strike of inspiration. I went outside and took in some of my outdoor-run-parts and made the run, probably took me less than an hour or so. Dad was at home, but I didn't say anything about it until afterwards and he was just "Okay"
What I do in my own bedroom is pretty much my own business, if I hadn't said it afterwards he probably wouldn't even have noticed (at least not until I asked him to feed the rabbits for the days I am at my mom's house)
The run was pretty simply made. Six walls of garden compost-walls and voila. Later on I even attached it to the wall with some hooks because he keep pushing the run away:roll:

Then again...Sasuke has been living indoors since the autumn and dad knows I can't keep three buns outside at the moment, with only two functioning hutches.

Well, I share a room with my sister. We don't have any garden compost-walls, and it's not just having a run for him; its being able to interact with him more, because he doesn't even seem to like the outside anyway as whenever I take him inside, he'll go mad if he's got to go back outside again. Yet when I come to take him inside, he looks up at me hopefully.

I said that Starsky's hutch would be too small for another rabbit, and she said: hmngh. But in a kind way. :) Which is good, because she didn't go mad this time.

can i ask how you attached the shelf?

we got a male dutch a few days ago and nero 3, after 1 night in it i realised it was a bit restrictive so popped back out and brought a 42" dog crate for him instead, would love to pop a shelf in for him but looking for inspiration on how to go about it :)

This is Bunnies setup - we wanted a shelf higher up but as she always laid on her hut she had since a baby and jumps off it madly when it food time or we come in we didn't want to take risk of her hurting herself so her dad built her a bigger bunny shack that she can either go under or lay on top off:D Bunnie's basically free range except at night and when we are out when she has a pen attached to crate so she can still run around :)

My two bunnies are free range indoors:love: They have a just over three foot cage in the hallway which is used as a litter tray and they have their water bowl and hayrack in there too. They are never ever shut in as I could not bear to see them caged. The door is permanently wedged open. They eat their breakfast in the hallway and relax and sleep in my room. Lailey will follow me to the bathroom and will beg at the fridge in the kitchen:love: Porridge only really ventures into the hallway and my room. There is a baby gate on the living room to stop Lailey from getting behind tv etc and chewing wires but when we're in she will let us know that she wants to go outside for some fresh air:D Living room leads out to secure balcony through doors:D Lailey luuurves it out there. There is a grass box and carrots growing in a pot and I have no worries that a fox will get them. Good luck with your set up:D:D
