Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How to tell if my rehomed rabbit is overweight?

Alpha Buck
Hi,
I got my rabbit yesterday that I have rehomed from friends. I believe she is a french lop rabbit agouti in colour, have yet to post photos, she seems very rounded, how do I know if shes overweight?

Hiya!
Probably best to get her to the vets for a general health check - teeth, toes, tummy! Is she vaccinated/ spayed? Maybe you can talk to the vet about getting those done as well.
Bunnies should be able to clean themselves up easily, and eat their caecal poos from their bottoms, without their fat getting in the way :D Generally speaking you should easily be able to feel their ribcages (I believe).
Looking forward to pics!

hi from what you say, she sounds as if she is carrying a few extra pounds, The other owners say she has been spay, and she is vaccinated as I have her vaccination card

Three steps to look for,

1) if you CAN see and feel the ribs - underweight

2) if you CAN'T see the ribs but CAN feel them - correct weight

3) if you CAN'T see or feel ribs - overweight

follow this and you can't go wrong.
