Tips for photographing rabbits needed!

Cob-Web

Warren Scout
I am a keen photographer, but specialise in landscapes - when it comes to people and pets, I'm a complete amateur!

I tried taking some pictures of Flopsy and Topsy at the weekend, but they are awful - you can't even tell that they are rabbits

Any tips......please? :D

I'm not great but I found that

Lots and lots of natural light...flash makes their eyes go red
Plain background (like a sheet hung over your sofa) or ouside on grass or in flowers
camera that can take multiple shots in a row

can all help to get good piccis.

I thoughts i'd add my fav shots that I've done...which broke rule 2 in the first one but you don't see a lot of it

Try laying on the floor or popping them on a chair - side shots work better than looking at the top of their head ;)

I like to take photographs so you are at the same level as the animal. So basically lay down on the floor, balancing your camera on cushion or small bean bag (you can get special photography ones but they aren't necessary, a small bag full of split peas or something works just as well). Be pacient and wait for the rabbit to come to where you want it rather than follow it around! Could take hours and hundreds of shots to get the right one, so bundles of patience is also required!

Patience.

You need bags of it to get a decent picture of a bunny usually.

And a digital camera so you can delete the 100 ruubish, blurred or out of focus photos you get for every handful of reasonable pictures. Taking pictures of bunnies with a film camera is far too expensive as I've found out. Why did I decided to include my bunnies in my photography assignment?

I just use my digital camera, take a whole bunch of pictures seemingly with no goal whatsoever, and remove the bad ones (sure I end up with 10 images looking almost exactly the same this way but...)
I also like to place the camera on the floor while snapping pictures, I tend to take pics without even looking at the screen:lol: So even I get surprised when I look through them afterwards.
Be careful about using flash on a bar cage/wire as I've noticed it tends to take up all the flash, making the picture almost black, only light available is from the metal bars. Occasionally I use this as an advantage though, like if the images just end up TOO bright, (and they tend to get blurry when I don't use the flash) but it requires a lot of practice and trying and failing horribly a lot of times to get it just right:lol:

I Usually just let mine run about in the garden,
Changing the shutter speed and exposure to get the perfect shot.
I Usually spend a couple of good hours when coming this:
One example of my work:
The turf was being redone so i used the old pen with bark...
and one of my rabbits sitting in the corner and the one closer so... I Focus on the rabbit and got one in the background and this is how it turned out:

On a bright sunny day , its good to have the shutter speed high so whenever they move you don't have a movement line... but don't turn it down too low, as it may affect the light!

the best pictures i get is either outside with lots of light or in a light room and no flash on the camera background is also important when it comes to getting the best picture :)

example of outside no flash and natural light

and inside, no flash and natral light

I just sit there and go click click click and then delete the 300 bad photos   I find laying down on their level gets better pictures :D I just watch them play and take photos while they are doing it, if I put one of them somewhere and went to take a picture they would be off before ive even picked up the camera

And I agree with the natural light thing the others have mentioned, my favourite pics of my buns are outside in daylight or inside with no flash x
