Whilst Crunchie was stood on the vets examination table last night I noticed that she has lice (complete coincidence cuz I took her in for her UTI).

This is the second outbreak I've had (first was a few years ago), yet I have NEVER known anybody elses rabbits have lice (at least nobody who's admitted to it).

Last time we had to use Xenex Ultra to get rid of the little critters, but I'm very wary about using it now since all the bad reports. Ivermectin seems to work temporarily, but the lice return when you stop treatment.

Argh! :censored:

Simba had repetitive mites last year and ended up having xenex ultra spot on to get rid of it but im guessing Lice is something different? Can you see them?

We have treated our outside buns for lice or mites, you could see them as little specs, kind of like dust. We used xeno for them, they are nice and small. I think we caught it early as it only took one treatment and they've been fine since. We completely disenfected everything. We think they got it from a carpet someone gave us. Since all the other stuff they share with the indoor buns and they didn't get it.

ooh they wiggle like little worms too..eww
our first bun got them from visiting the vet for a dental check..the vet used to wrap piggies n buns in a pink towel or place them on it so they didnt slip around. the piggies in before us turned out to be infested..wonderful!

she had ivermectin jab after jab..nothing..so we had to use xenex shampoo it was herbal and smelt lovely and we persevered..she had xenex ultra and it worked but not before driving her nuts..she was lucky she dint react like my other bun did a few years later..i never will use it again.

have you tried xeno 450 drops or beaphar

i recomend keeping stress levels down a smuch as poss...washing and steam cleaning if you can bedding living area toys and brushes etc...or you risk reinfection constantly.

id give the drops a go..ive just used the xeno 450 on bif...and so far so good..no horrific reaction.

good luck and dont give up.maybe do aprentative dose for a few months ot be on the safe side?

Mites and lice are 2 different things. Mites tend to cause nasty skin conditions and hair loss, but lice don't tend to cause any symptoms at all, so an infestation can easily go unnoticed until it's really bad :(

I feel bad that I didn't notice earlier, but Crunchie is in the garage at the moment and the lighting in there is quite dull so I didn't spot that anything was wrong.

Cheers purplebumble...at least it's not only the lice on my rabbits that are resistant to Ivermectin

I've used the Xeno 450, but I'm not particularly hopeful because it's Ivermectin. Why did Xenex Ultra have to cause reactions. Argh! :censored:

I've checked all the other rabbits, and can't see any lice on them, so hopefully it's not coming in via hay or bedding.

If the Xeno 450 doesn't work I might have to resort to Seleen shampoo, which I don't really want to do, especially because Crunchie isn't well at the moment (UTI and GI trouble :( )
