  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mites

I'm sure my rabbits aren't normal:?:D Josh my flemish giant got mites back in November because he had an infection in his chin area. Anyway since then he as had every mite treatment possible from the vet and nothing as cleared it. My vet is even now at a loss with him the last dose of Ivomec he had was a large dose and then after that he would have to go onto sheep dosages which isn't an option, We have now tried Xeno and that isn't making any difference. It isn't bothering him at all, I just want it sorting for him.

Are you sure it's mites?

Is the affected area actually under his chin, or do you mean that the chin infection lowered his immunity, which led to the mites?

Amy

It's definately mites, As my vets husband (who is a vet) is a skin specialist. He got the mites because he was run down with the infection in his chin.

Are they the horrible mites that cause dandruff or the relatively harmless mites that live on the fur?

If they're the latter, the only way to really kill them off is to give the rabbit a bath in special shampoo (you really want to avoid this). Smokey has them and I haven't treated them, they cause her no problems and I don't want to stress her with a bath.

We have done the bath, can you imagine the state I was in when I was bathing a 7.3kg rabbit:lol::lol::lol: Flamin mites
