fleas!

Hugbut

Mama Doe
Despite only having indoor cats, i have just found a flea on Hugo
I'm going to frontline the cats cats as soon as the vet opens but i'm unsure what to do about the bun.My vet has a bad habit of charging for everything (they were going to charge me £30 to dispense worm tablets to my cat?!) so i'm going to buy his treatment online if it's available.I've found a product called XENEX ULTRA SPOT ON & was wondering if anyone could tell me if it's any good or weather i should take him to the vet.The thought of fleas in my house makes me sick so i want to get this sorted asap.
thanks in advance!

The best flea treatment for rabbits is Advantage.

I think Xenex is extremely toxic to cats, so wouldn't use it if you've got cats in the house.

Thanks, i just found somewhere selling advantage but it says it's prescription only - looks like it's another trip to the vets :(

Yeah, it is really expensive. I've paid between £17 and £25 for a box of 4 vials of Advantage

BTW The instructions for Advantage say that you need to treat rabbits weekly, but it only really needs doing once a month.

i buy advantage orange for my little buns and cats and advantage purple for my frenchies.....it used to be free delivery im sure..but maybe i have to buy the 6 month pack its why!

orders over £55 are free..i can rack that up in bulk!

for kitty owners they do the generic version of drontal..no prescription..cheaper...but more to the point..direct to my door.

im due to buy a stock up again.shame they dont do panacur!!

When I took my first rabbit to be spayed, I was nervously waiting for the vet the call to say it was over and she was fine. However, I got a phone call to say that they had had to cancel the op because she was covered in fleas. I was mortified!!!! I got her from a friend who had cats and she had caught some, then she had lived outside all winter and I didn't know that rabbits could get fleas. I got advantage for her which costs about £3 a vial. You can buy it in packs of 4 from my vet and it is about £13. P@H sell Bob Martin's flea drops which is for cats, small dogs and rabbits. It is £2.99 a tube but don't use anything unless it specifically states that it is for rabbits.

Thanks for all the info, i managed to get the vet to sell advantage to me without having to pay for Hugo to see the vet as they saw him a few weeks ago.Now cats & rabbit have been treated so hopefully it's all sorted.thanks again for all your help everyone

When i took my rabbit to the vet because she had mange, they said they wouldnt give her Xenex all in one for mites and fleas because apparently they did test on xenex and is can have bad effect on the future health of your rabbit. Can cause breathing difficulties and higher chance of cancer in later life. Well thats what my vet said anyway
