P@H :?
I went to Tesco and its just over the way so popped in to look at what they have in for homing....
There is a 5 yr old female who lived in a school and foxes have been sniffing around so they have given her to P@H. She has ear mites and weepy eyes. I asked one of the staff (she is really nice and knew she would be honest) and she said that they were quite worried about her and that she has weepy eyes and crusty ears. It was really busy and she was on the till so didn't get anymore out of her but I asked how much the donation was and she said whatever the person can afford.
Now....I know that rabbit will not be fully treated, I bet the teeth haven't been checked and she is in general bad condition and may well be older than 5. I don't know what to do :? I have a rabbit shed free but can't put her in there as its too cold as she has been indoors for a couple of weeks. I have an indoor cage but thats booked for boarding in a few weeks.
I just really feel she won't get the help she needs though. Im not too concerned about vet bills, It will just mean my vet debt will be much bigger but so long as I pay some off each month its not a problem. The staff at this branch are, in the majority, very caring but I suspect there is a limit on how much they are allowed to spend on veterinary treatment per animal. What if she gets homed to someone with little knowledge and money to pay for vet bills :?
Hmmmm.....
Someone tell me what I should do!!!!!!

I probably would go get her if she needs to see a vet xx

I couldnt leave an animal anywhere if I knew they werent receiving the right veterinary care.

I would call the RSPCA, its irresponsible for them to keep an animal in store who is in need of treatment.

I think I'd have to take her home with me and get her sorted out, could you get something to put her in temporarily like a pen, I had Poppy in the Zooplus one for a bit before I bonded her with Charlie.

Thats awful that she came from a school in that state, thats hardly teaching kids how to look after animals is it.

Im going to go get her in the morning.

To be fair, the store are treating her mites and weepy eyes but haven't investigated. Its highly unlikely they have even thought of teeth probs or any other probs that may cause it such as snuffles.

Please don't turn this thread into a P@H bashing thread ;)

I just posted to confirm that I should get her even though I shouldn't be adding to my collection! Hehe!

I have an indoor cage and she can have free range of the house but I have boarders booked in in a few weeks and im also looking after my friends dogs beginning of Feb who are NOT small animal freindly, this is what stopped me taking her there and then. I will have to set something up in the living room for her whilst they stay, luckily im on half term the week the dogs are here so they won't be left alone at all (I have images of them breaking the door down!) When the boarders are here I will have to have her in my bedroom or something!

Another typically neglected school pet :(

It shouldn't be allowed, they obviously haven't taken responsibilty for her, I wouldn't be suprised if she's been dumped there because she has health problems.

Thats exactly what my suspicions are :(

Im going to ask round a few people I know at diff schools and find out which one it was. There was def a school though that had 2 rabbits killed a month or so ago, it was in the local paper, maybe she was a survivor?
She looks so rough though that either way she hasn't had much tlc :(

Im worried now! I will ring them first thing and ask them to hold her for me til I can get there! She isn't available until tomorrow, I think prob because that will be the last dose of whatever meds she is on there. So im worried someone else who wont be able to pay for vet tx will get there first!
Arghhhhh! If I had had a sane head today I would have not worried about where to put her and persuaded them to let me take her there and then! Grrr!

Sarah86

I don't think that anyone will have taken her unless their intentions were the same as yours, for the sake of £25 I'm sure they'd choose a 'cute baby bunny' instead.

Yes thats true! Im just being para and feeling guilty for not trying to take her today I think. My heads all muddled today too, uni stress!
There was another 16 mth old bun in too which I couldn't see and a white guinea pig :( No details on them though...

Isn't the store under some sort of obligation to make sure the rabbit is fit and well before rehoming it? If other rescues are spending their finances ensuring rabbits are, then surely this new "rescue" programme they're building up should come in line with these standards, especially as they're the ones with ample finances at their disposal? :?

13-01-2008, 09:51 PM
I think you should get her free, or say you can only afford to pay £1 for her as she needs £100 spending on vets - they did say as pay as much as you can afford didn't they?

I also think she'll be fine in your shed - she can settle down better somewhere quiet like that and won't need to be moved in a week, and really a chilly shed is definitely better for her than remaining in the shop! :D

Because they are not actually 'selling' the animals they are not in breach of their pet shop license and the council cannot act.

They could be reported to the RSPCA but only if the animal was being denied veterinary treatment.

Its a nice legal loophole

Hope you get her okay! I would say, 'Im going to adopt her, but im not going to donate as getting her back into a good state of health will cost me a small fortune at the vets, Im doing you a favour'.

It really is fatal looking in adoption centres! And gumtree etc....

Leanne
13-01-2008, 10:23 PM
Yes im going to suggest they let me have her for nothing as I will be paying who knows how much at the vets! I will def not pay more than a fiver, I don't want to give them a penny but I think they will happily accept that at the most considering the circumstances. They are giving her meds, hence why she isn't allowed to be adopted until tomorrow, I don't know what though. Will find out tomorrow. They were manically busy so didn't get a chance to find out anymore.

I avoid that place like the plague.... but a bun in need ais a bun in need and if she need tlc and meds I dont blame you.... but I agree with Elve, I'd only give them £1 or nothing.

Lol just like me! I nearly gave in with one in the adoption section last week as she was a spitting image of my Lionel even down to the markings it was unreal!

Glad you are going to get her though, if the one near me is still there in a couple of weeks (any excuse!) I think I will adopt her

He was in a small enclosure... with a small amount of food and small water... Not much hay either...

I really waned to bring him home to give him a caring home, but We havn't got enough space for him!

I felt so sorry for him!!:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry: :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry

Oh no, there are some really nice, caring staff in my one too! There was plenty of hay in all the animal pens which was great to see.
Its just that I think their hands are tied with company policy and they don't home check so the only reason im going to take her is because who knows where she will end up. She is in a right state, not on deaths door and some people wouldn't even notice she had problems but certainly needs some investigation into whats going on with her eyes and poor coat condition. Other people may not think that there is an underlying problem and end up leaving her untreated :?

Aaaggghhh my o/h would not be impressed, 2 is my limit, I'd only do it if she needed vetinary treatment and wasn't going to get it. Their adoption scheme worries me, anyone could get their hands on a rabbit, just the same as pet shops and back yard breeders though I suppose.

Look.....ANY animal in store regardless of whether for sale or adoption should get medical attention. NO animal should be up for rehoming unless it is deemed as fit and well. If you have set your heart on giving this bun a good home, speak to the manager and express your concerns and see what arrangements can be made regarding the medical bills. In the paperwork, it states that you will become responsible for vet costs from the time of adoption, however in this instance it is obvious that there are issues that need to be dealt with and you shouldn't have to pay the bills.

Uh-oh! I'm popping in this afternoon. I think that branch is okay, thats where Charlie came from, the store manager has his own house rabbits and gave my bf some really good advice, there is another guy who works there though who doesn't have much of a clue, he's really helpful and nice enough but he told me that its really difficult to bond two rabbits and showed me a scar that he got from putting two unspayed does together who apparently 'had no reason to not get on'

Hey guys,

Just to let you all know that I didn't get to bring the little girl bun home.
She was pts by the shop after I had asked to adopt her and had told them it didn't matter if she had a dental/snuffles problem. I went in at 9am, told she was seeing the vet at 9.40 and got a phone call to say she had really overgrown teeth and needed a dental but they opted to pts before they even rang me back. I am gutted. Im writing a letter of complaint to HO.

I don't want to talk about it on the forum anymore and I don't want this thread to turn into a big explosion please.

But feel free to pm me if you want to discuss it.

Thanks.
