Seeing as I have four now (oooh, the pride!) my mum mentioned looking into getting pet insurance for them, so that if in the event they were to get sick (hopefully they won't anytime soon...) they'd be covered. Anyone else have this for their bunnies and can tell me a bit about it?

I would just keep a contingency in the bank and not touch it as petplan and some others dont cover everything, thats what i do.

i have petplan for my two as im rubbish at saving money!

with more than one pet you get multipet discount, i pay £17 a month for two, some people pay £15 for 2 but they told me the age and breed of my buns bumped it up by £2.

it covers up to:

£2000 a year for vet fees
£750 a year for complimentry treatment
£250 a year for boarding fees (ie if i get admitted into hospital)
£250 a year for advertising and reward

edit: those are for each bun

I've just taken that out after seeing how much Miffy's vet bill was on another thread, I'm not sure if I would if I had more than two rabbits though, the monthly fee would be considerably more for 4 rabbits I think I would be tempted to just have a vet fund.

Ive read on here that insurance doesnt cover everything, dont know what it doesnt cover though because I have never looked at it :D

I just save, if I ever need it and its not enough I will just take out loan or get another credit card or something to pay it  My vet lets you pay in instalments anyways

it wont cover:

illness or injury that showed signs before the insurance started
preventative care (ie vaccinations)
cosmetic work
fleas
food, unless prescribed for bladder stones
treatment related to pregnancy and birth
spaying/castration
emergency fees if it wasnt an emergency
hospitalisation unless recommended by the vet
trimming teeth
euthenasia
behavioural illness
cages
grooming
post mortem
transplants

you have to get vaccinations and dental checks to keep the insurance valid, if you dont get a dental check they wont pay for dental treatment

Is it okay for the dental checks to be done every 6 months when they are vaccinated, thats when mine get their teeth checked. I haven't got all my info through the post yet. One of the reasons I took it out is so that I can push for better/more thorough treatment if needs be and money won't be an issue.

they only need a dental check once a year. they only need injections once a year too, but its better for the bun to get a 6 month myxi if your area is bad

Thats okay then, mine need their jabs at different times but they both go together and our vet checks them both, he's a nice guy. I get them done 6 monthly for peace of mind.

Petplan wont pay for dental treatment regardless of how often they have their teeth checked as dental problems are very common in rabbits, ours get their teeth checked every 4 weeks at the minute. Miffy's required 4 ops to have her teeth burred under GA in the last 5 months and we've had to pay for every one as petplan have refused to pay out. They've been great with everything else though and i'd rather pay £16 a month (for the 2) knowing that unless it's dental treatment it's covered, it's saved us over £1000 in the last year and we've had them covered from being 10weeks old!!! The dental treatment under GA costs about £70 a time except this last event which cost £395 due to complications and well them not discovering a huge spur at the back of her mouth til it cut into her jaw and was then only located through xrays leading us to believe it's been there since she was first unwell with her teeth in August.

Hmmm i've just read my terms and conditions and i'm gonna railroad petplan tomorrow coz it says they will pay if she's had her teeth checked and she's had them checked loads of times so i'm not impressed

I have one bun insured with Petplan and pay £7.10 a month and am in the process of getting the second bun added to the policy. I had a rabbit before that I didn't insure and when she took ill I had to pay over £200 in vet fees and then the poor soul died. I didn't begrudge a penny at all. I hadn't realised how expensive it can be.

I know that not everything is covered i.e. vaccinations, parasites like fleas etc, but I would deal with them anyway. The buns get dental checks when they are vaccinated so I would expect for any dental work to be covered as that is what the policy stipulates and I always ask for this to be done when I make the appointment so the receptionist notes it on their record so it is evidenced.

There is also an excess of £45. So you have to bear the cost of the first £45. This is to stop small claims I suppose. The policy says that it covers for the lifetime of the animal and does not have an upper limit for treatment like some policies do. So if your pet develops a chronic illness it will be treated for life - according to the policy.

I did a lot of checking on the internet when I wanted to get them insured and this was the best policy that I could see. A lot of the pet insurance is aimed specifically at dogs and cats but some of the policies that include rabbits had upper treatment limits or an annual amount.

My payments are £17 per month for both, I don't understand how they assess it, mine are both only just over a year old, vacc'd and neutered :?

I have my 10 giants insured with petplan and it doesn't cost me £100 a month. I also have my four dogs and 1 cat insured with them. As regards the rabbit insurance I have had to make a couple of claims and they have all been settled really quick with no fuss. The beauty of it is is that it is for life as Charlie one of my British giants as deformed left legs (both) and is under an orthopedic vet as he gets pressure sores and all you have to do is ring up the vets order his cream that we use and submit a claim form:D I have a claim going through at the moment for Josh (my Flemish) as he as had infection in his Saliva glands which caused lumps under his chin.
I would definately reccommend insurance for them.
Karen my fosterer ended up last year with 2 vets bills for 2 of her rabbits that came to well over £500 and all she had to pay was the excess for both. If you get more than 2 insured make sure you ask for the multi pet discount.

Just wanted to say that Petplan will not generally cover dental issues unless it is something that causes other problems i.e blocked tear ducts, abscesses etc....if your bunny needs his molars filing for spurs or anything they don't cover that!!!! which really annoys me, all of mine are insured yet I still have to pay 50 quid for every dental and I have three that have to have them regularly!

I have all three of mine covered by pet plan, I think it is worth it just for the peace of mind, I haven't had to claim on it yet but still think it is worthwhile. I pay about £10 for each.

Yep i can second this they're mean!!! I rang them today regarding miffy as the GI stasis and well the £400 bill i got lumbered with and they've said to put a claim in and they'll consider it, wouldnt mind but she'd had her teeth checked by 4 vets in the last 3 weeks and each time been told her teeth were fine and it was only when she started bleeding from her mouth and they put her under GA that they found the tooth problem but by then she'd already gone into GI stasis and her liver was failing, all's well now but still it would be nice if they paid out, i dont even mind them not paying for the spur removal lol
