  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

do you weigh your buns?

i weighed Alvin about a month ago and he weighed 2.27kg and i weighed him again today he weighed 2.27kg again - how spooky is that...

i just wondered how often you weigh buns, plus with him being such a demon i put him in his carrier to do it, is this accurate enough? or do i have to somehow get him to stay still on the scales if i ever manage to catch him to weigh.....

Stand on the scales yourself and then subtract his weight from yours :) Dont suppose its much different to doing it in a carrier though. I never weigh mine, we're alwaaays at the vets so they do it

Eta, Cant remember their weights off the top of my head, Jen is 1.9kg & Rhia weighs just over a kg more than Jen xx

they arent bathroom scales, they are postal/baby scales... i erm refuse to weigh myself so i dont own bathroom ones lolololol

They're probably as accurate as the ones at the vets! I weigh my healthy ones weekly and I weigh Santa twice a week - weight loss is often an overlooked early warning symptom because it's so difficult to see very gradual loss. My vet suggests that 3 weight losses in a row or more than 5% drop in one go means a trip to the vets is needed. I weigh my smaller ones on kitchen scales because they are accurate to the gram so it gives a very good indication of their weight - much more accurate than bathroom scales.

I hardly weigh mine at all, unless their being wormed (sooty had ec so we will have to keep on worming 2-3 times a year and as he's with 3 others they need to be done too)

I mainly go by feel of ribs and spine (can't really feel spine, can feel ribs a bit, can't see either). I'd weigh them though if they seemed a bit more porky or skinny than they should.
