FAO people with a particular vet

Becki xX

Warren Veteran
For those of us who have one particular vet, What do you do when they are off ill? Our vet is fantastic & is the one person Ive found who treats my rabbits to the standard of care they deserve (and more) and genuinely does anything in her power to make them better etc. But shes been off loads recently and Jen is needing to see her regularly. She'd asked me to call her tonight but I did and apparently she's off poorly and will be til at least after next week! *This is where I immediately start panicing!* Jen is nearly at the end of this course of meds, it hasnt work and I havent a clue what to do next! I'm going to try & find another vet I can use as back up, but Im worried that because they wont have treated Jen since she first showed signs of illness, they'll do something wrong or, well I dont know but Im wary!...Sorry for the ramble, Was going out of my mind about Jen before I knew this so now I cant even phone her for advice. Argggh!!

Im lucky in that ive worked with a fair few over the years and have a list of vets im happy to use should mine be ill/away! All are in London though so I did some detective work and have found a guy locally who I would use in an absolute emergency. :D

Could you not find another vet but ask your vet to either explain over the phone or fax them your rabbits details over so they have at least a (permanent) history of everything - your bun's illness, treatments given etc :D

I have another vet who I have no problem using, just she is not as experienced but has been very good so far before I found my current vet (Exotics expert).

If neither of them are available (like Christmas Day!) I have to take my chance with someone else at the practice and have not been over impressed on a couple of occasions.

I would like to get a couple more as reserves even if they are at a different practice.

Can anyone on here recommend someone in your area?

Ooh look at you lot all prepared! Think Ive got some vet-hunting to do. Am trying to work out when I turned into such a worrying old mother over my babbits!!

I would have to find a different vet to go to as I cannot stand the other vet at my vets not good with animals at all
I should think about a back up as well!

The practice i take Maya and Bindi to, has many vets there. Maya usually sees one of two vets. Both i trust to do there best for him. Usually turns out that one or the other is wirking when the other isn't - they usually do an indepth report of the visit so the next knows everything that has happened.

I use two local practices I am VERY OPEN with them about the fact that I use another practices and provided I am honest about the treatment any patient has received they are fine with it. They understand in a rescue situation we have to look at saving money where we can.

One surgery uses the dreaded 'VetsNow' in out of hours but has Sat & Sun surgeries. The other is independant and consists of one vet (and owner) and one nurse, they provide there own emergency cover.

There is only one vet out of a combined total of four I will not see thought each specialises in different areas so in certain situations I do have preferences.

I usually use the one vet at the practice I go to but she was off one time I went and I ended up seeing another vet and I was really impressed with her. Although I still need to see my original vet if it's for teeth clipping I am just as happy to see her with any other problems now :D

I think my situation is similar to yours Chloe in that our local vet has 6 vets and of these I know that 3 of them are brilliant with rabbits, so although I'd always prefer to see Kevin, I've confidence in that the others I've seen in connection with the rabbits.

we have finally found another new vet at our parctise who is getting to rabbit savvy level she definatly cares ( i think she is our savvy vets prodejei(cant spell) lol as if she doesnt know i know she is not scared to ring him and ask or get other opinions
unlike another vet we took chels to as our vet off... who told us its not myxi its so unlikely for a rabbit who has been vaccs to get it its prob conjuntivitus...oh the lumps are some old injury.... er i dont think so hence our jason saw her immediatly when we called him...yup its myxi he said without pullin her around and getting her upset like the other vet...at least she is on baytril already he said that will be helping. and he always rings up to check on her if shes been ill and never minds a worried phone call any time of day. the new vet is also thankfully very good with rabbits and learnig quickly the more in depth rabbity stuff though for routine things she great already!

i dont actually know what id do if my vet wasnt about for an emergancy i trust her with all of my buns and always get uneasy when another vet looks at them :? i had a diffrent vet take misty's stitches out after being neutered and i think i was shaking more then misty  luckily though when ive had to ring for emergancy appointments my good vet that i trust is always called out for me :D

I've got the same problem with mine. I go to a surgery where there is one good vet and 2 really bad ones, that I would reluctantly trust with an emergency only. My vet is often off at the moment, either on conferences, holiday or sick. :(

Its a worry isnt it...Especially as Jens poorly, Im constantly on pins knowing there is nobody above me who I totally trust to help me! Sounds a bit daft but I cant settle at all without checking Jen every five minutes  Thanks muchly for your replies  X

Most vets are very reluctant to treat a patient who is under the care of another practice, they have a code of ethical practice and its seen as very bad professional manners.

If you use more than one surgery for the same animal you must make both sides aware that is what is happening for an exchange of records of necessary and so they can consult with each other if needed.

Explain your situation and if they are confident dealing with Jens problems they should be happy with the arrangement but may want to speak to your current vets first.
