Vet in Richmond, Surrey? Previous vet says vaccinations not needed....

Hi, Barney has been neutered, but when i went, the vet said that because he is a house rabbit and doesn't go outside, he doesn't need the myxi or VHD vaccinations.

Is this right?

No, house bunnies can get these diseases, too. And if you ever want to use bunny boarding, they insist that your bunny is vaccinated. I'd change to a vet who knows more about rabbits.

House rabbits risk is of getting myxi and VHD greatly reduced but I'd still get him vaccinated, maybe not every 6 months, but every year as fleas, mites and mozzis carry myxi so they can come inside on your clothes or on any other pets you have that are allowed outdoors.
Your vet doesn't seem too rabbit savvy.

In addition to the above about myxi, VHD is very easily carried indoors on shoes, clothes, etc. if you've walked through somewhere that'd had infected animals

Your vet is talking out of his bum.

I storngly recommend you find a new one who KNOWS rabbits. Vaccinations are basic, God forbid you ever need to take your rabbit to that vet for anything more complex

If you state your rough location someone near you may be able to recommend a good rabbit vet, or, if your a member of the RWA you can call the helpline and ask for details off the Rabbit Vet Register held by them.

agreed vet talking out of bum!! lol seriously get him done and change to a rabbit savvy vet will make all the difference to your rabbits life and health if it wasnt for our vet jason im sure that countless things would be different and our buns would never have had the best possible care. he will let us ring any time to check anything because he cares. (chels got myxi tho not an indoors rabbit and if not treated as quickly then am sure she would not be with us today)

Totally agree, the only myxi death my vet saw last year was a house rabbit... the owner thought he was safe it doors.:(

If they can come inside on your clothes, what stops them coming in during the six months they are not necessarily covered for? I would suggest having 6 monthly if you vaccinate at all, otherwise it's not complete peace of mind.

I live in Richmond, surrey.

Does anyone know a good vets round here? I feel terrible for listening to the vet. I've had Barney since June so he should have been done by now then.

Alter the thread title to ask for a good vet in Richmond, Surrey and that should attract the right people.

Thank you, have done. It's not something you can really ask a vet..."Do you know alot about rabbits?" .....I imagine they'll just say yes!

I am very annoyed with the vet....I have never had rabbits before Barney, so all my info comes from the vet, books and here of course!

It's not your fault, we assume vets know exactly what they are talking about... not always the case unfortunately.

My first vet recommended having the myxi but not the VHD. I asked him why and his answer was "I have never seen a case of it in my entire career" There maybe several reasons for this: A) VHD kills so fast that the rabbit is never seen by a vet and is buried in the garden straight away  B) He has seen rabbits with VHD but mis-diagnosed it :? or could not find a problem :(

I have never seen a tiger.... but I know they exist!

You can ask them how many rabbits they have throught the practice, what there procedures are for vaccination, if they provide pain relief and gut stimulants post-op, what there mortality rate is like during ops (it does vary from vet to vet), if you need to fast your rabbit before an op, do they attend small animal conferences and top-up courses....basic questions whose answer should give you an idea of who you are dealing with and what they know.

I take my rabbits to Christabel in Twickenham, she knows lots about rabbits. ARC use her, and Jane has her 40 bunnies treated by her, as well. The other vet ARC use, is called Tim and the surgery is in Kew Road. Not sure how good he is, but Jane will know, she takes her bunnies there for X-rays.

What part of Richmond are you in? Let me know if you want the phone number and address for our vet.

I live in SE London but went to see Chris Hall in East Sheen several times for one of my buns to have dentals (my normal vet recommended him). He's an exotics specialist and although I found he was rather blunt with me, he really does know his stuff.

Thanks!

Bavarian Bunny, I am in Kew (Kew Road). The vet I used before was the one in Kew Road (I think it's called PG Andre?). I might try the one in Twickenham, yes please can I have the address?

Bev Bunny I will look into that one too!

Thanks :)
