facial abscess-no improvement

bunny mad lisa

Mama Doe
hi all
My bunny Joon has been treated for her abscess for almost 4 months now. she's had her eye removed and various treatments. My vet consulted with Frances harcourt brown and her suggestions were great but still hasn't worked. My vet has said he thinks we have done all we can for her. The only thing that might work is to remove the tooth that started the problem in the first place as it is probably infected. The trouble is the root goes into her eye socket and to remove it would be a nightmare and he would have to go in through her cheek. he said he wouldn't want to do it and a specialist would need to do it. This would mean travelling miles which i don't think she would cope with and it's such a big op i don't think i could put her through it and all her teeth are terrible so she may have even more problems anyway.
She will now have to have the abscess flushed everyday for the rest of her life, which she does allow me to do with only a little stress and i give her metacam for any pain. She does seem quite happy in herself and does eat well. I have been quite distraught as i know that i am going to have to let her go at some point...but when? I've had to make this decision before and i know that i will "just know" but it is heartbreaking. i am going to have to take it day by day and I have told myself that for now she is coping well but if she starts to suffer with it or has to have too much treatment then i will have to say goodbye. She's been through so much and seems to tak it all i her stride. Shes's certainly a very brave bunny and I don't want to give up on her just yet..
thanks for listening,
Lisa and the buns

Awwwwww Lisa I think you have made the right decision to not put Joon through such major surgery when she has other Dental problems too and the longterm outlook post major surgery is not good.

Joon sounds as though she is coping with a chronic condition and she has you to make sure that she wont 'suffer'. Looking after a Bun with a life limiting condition is hard but it is also rewarding in that you can make every day the Bun has remaining full of love and care. For a Bunny a time limited happy and loved life is worth more than a very long life of 'indifference' from their human carer.

Im really sorry you have been left in this difficult position but you know you have tried all you can for her, as opposed to what you could do for you.

I hope she has some time left with you but should it come to an end sooner than you had hoped (which is always the case  as you wish they could go on for ever) you can take some comfort in the fact that she was loved and cherished in her final days.

(((Hugs))) for you and lots of <<<vibes>>> for Joon.

Thinking of you both. I know she will live out the rest of her life happily, pain free and loved by you x
