  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

just found an abscess on Harvey

Have just discovered an abscess on Harvey's shoulder :( He had a fight with Theo and got bitten. I was hoping that the wound was just swollen and it would be ok. It actually looked like it was starting to reduce in size and he is ok in himself. However, I noticed Peppermint giving him a good groom and realised that she had pulled the scab off and there was pus underneath. We have an appointment at vet tomorrow morning. I am so very worried about my special boy ... please send him lots of healing vibes.

Poor Harvey
He may need an op to remove the abscess capsule but hopefully your Vet will get it all and then a course of the appropriate abx should see him right as rain :D

Good luck at the Vets

I have already drained as much out as I can and cleaned it up as best I can. There is still more pus deeper into the wound that I cannot get to. I am hoping to avoid an op if at all poss, but will discuss all options with vet.

Jane - or anyone ... have you ever tried Dextrose solution on an abscess ? I was reading about it earlier and was thinking about using it.

Personally I would always opt for getting the entire capsule removed if at all possible. It gives a much better longterm outlook.
I have not used Dextrose on abscesses but I have used Manuka Honey

Surgery is the best option I know, but I'm a terrible wuzz when it comes to ops  And he is 5 - 6 years old as well. I was seriously stressed when he was castrated just before xmas - its a horrible feeling. What did you think of the manuka honey ?
