  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

see previous post http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=112738 as poor liquorice is getting the 'snip' next tuesday.

After asking vet questions regarding pain relief etc i asked about the actual surgery and how to care for the stitches. She said that she does not stitch the incision afterwards just 'pushes' the skin back together and it knits quite easily. She has found that the stiches can irrate the bunny and this way is much better.

She says there are many ways to close the wound....some vets choose stitches, some glue and some pushing skin back togther as the skin is paper thin...

Does this sound right to you? Anyone had this method done with your bunny?

Yup, we dont suture the skin at all in rabbit castrations. Just the same as cat castrations, it is such a tiny superficial skin wound that its sealed back together within 24 hours anyway. Dont worry about anything 'falling' out as all the internal stuff is sealed over.
We had one vet who insisted on suturing the rabbits scrotums and it just causesd nothing but trouble!

Bluebell was neutered on Thurs and he has no stitches either. Aparently their skin is quite sticky and almost seems to glue itself back together. I just have to check it daily to check its healing ok.
