I noticed yesterday that Hobbes had a big lump on his jaw so took him to the vets first thing this morning. I have to take him back tomorrow for him to have it drained under anesthetic. The vet said it must have been there a while but i haven't seen it, it seems to have grown suddenly as I gave him a good check over on Sunday and didn't see it then :(
I'm not too happy with the vet as he said bring him back tomorrow and don't feed him after midnight :roll:I will be giving him plenty of hay tonight and some pellets in the morning before he goes in. I hope he will be ok without Phoebe as they won't let her go in with him :(
Fingers crossed he will be ok.
oooh dear poor Hobbes :( Is that your usual vet?
Cant you find another vet :? abcesses are so nasty, not something I would want someone inexperienced with rabbits to tackle.
Lots of (((vibes))) for Hobbes.

Abscesses can come up really quickly, so I'm sure it's not that you didn't notice it.
Vibes for Hobbes.

Poor Hobbes:(
Bobby has an abcess on his jaw, which I first spotted beginning of October. It was first of all drained under anaesthetic, and he had a tooth+root removed, but it started to fill up again, and he had it drained whilst he was awake. He's had a very long course of Baytril, but nothing for about 4 weeks now, and the abcess hasn't started filling up again. I'm delighted about this!
I'm sure you'll be able to get him sorted. I don't think Bobby will ever be 'cured' but he's a very happy bunny and doesn't seem to notice it at all.
Good luck at the vet tomorrow.

oooh dear poor Hobbes :( Is that your usual vet?
yes but i've only had to take them there for vaccinations and neutering. None of my rabbits have been ill before. My friends bunny had an abcess behind her eye which was treated there successfully so i'm hoping it will be ok :?
Do you think he will be ok to go back outside when he comes home? I'm worried as its so cold but I want him to go back with Phoebe as soon as possible as they are very attached to each other. I have a snugglesafe to put in the bed compartment.
I brought Bobby and Ruby into a temporary run in the garage after Bobby's op. He was eating and pooping as soon as he came home, adn Ruby was REALLy stressed out in a different environment, so I'm not sure I would do that again.
However, it is supposed to be getting colder, so I'm not sure? Maybe monitor him as he comes home to see how he is.
have you checked which vet your friend used at the practise? There's only one at mine that I'd let near my animals - they do vary a lot. When you go to fetch him it's probably a good idea to take Phoebe in a carrier in the car, and drive them around a bit - he'll smell funny and she might attack him if you just put them in their normal territory together.

She doesn't know, they don't tell you who is going to be operating on them and you usually end up seeing a different vet everytime you go there.
I did think about taking Phoebe with me when i collect him. I think it would be a good idea.
I will see how he is tomorrow and what the vet suggests. When i had them neutered and spayed they always suggest keeping them indoors overnight. They can go in the dining room, which is quite cool if they need to stay indoors. Phoebe isn't keen on being inside but I don't want Hobbes to be cold.
What a worry these rabbits are!

Aww Estelle Im sending lots of healing vibes to Hobbes and thinking of you hun x
If he is having a GA he needs to stay in at least overnght. Aneasthetic lowers the body temperature and an animal coming round and in recovery will struggle to self regulate (as do sick animals). Also energy expended on keeping himself warm is energy not expended on getting better!

Thanks, i will get the dog crate set up for them. I will be able to keep a better eye on him indoors and no doubt i'll have to give him antibiotics for a while so it will be easier to move them inside. I'm sure Phoebe will love nibbling my new dining room table :D

My indoor foster bun chewed through the playstation controller cable yesterday, my daughters weren't amused.:lol:

Our rabbit had a jaw abscess too which appeared very quickly so your vet may not necessarily be right about it being there for a while. I definitely wouldn't stop feeding him either before you take him in.
I hope Hobbes make a full recovery, jaw abscesses can be tricky but even the worst ones can be cured as our beloved Benny proved!

Thanks, i'm sure it only appeared yesterday although i had a feeling he wasn't quite as happy as normal last week but thought it was just the cold weather.
I'll give him his food in the morning. I don't want him to be hungry all day.

Hope Hobbes gets better soon.
Defo keep feeding him though. I always send a little parcel of hay and pellets for when they wake up too, so they nibble on something they like. I always stock up on herbs like Basil and Parsley, that usually gets them eating again too.

what's the cause? Is it internal or external? Is it at the outside of the jaw as in the cheek, or the inside?
Ditto on the indoor idea. Hobbes has to fight the sickness, he can't fight the sickness while fighting for the cold at the same time.
Sending healthy healing vibes to little Hobbes. Godspeed in a healthy recovery

Poor Hobbes :( I hope it all goes well for him. I agree with everything else already posted. I think I would remind the vet that rabbits should not be starved before an operation. Luckily you know this but someone who doesn't could end up loosing a bun this way.

I think its on the outside but I don't know until they've had a good look today. I've dropped him off this morning with a bag of food. Phoebe looks bewildered, wondering where he has gone. They have been together every day for the last four years.
Thanks for all your well wishes, they are very much appreciated.
My electric is being turned off today :( so i won't be able to update until this evening.

Just had a call to say he is coming round from the anesthetic. The abscess is quite bad and has damaged his jaw bone. He will need antibiotics and his wound bathing. I'm picking him up later and she is going to show me how to inject him, i'm dreading this part. He doesn't like being held anyway so its not going to be very nice for him :(

I have him back home now. He's looking a little bit sorry for himself but i think he is going to be ok. I managed the injection without any problems which was a relief. I'm so glad to have him back.
My friend said that he wouldn't go through all this trouble for a rabbit. It made me realise how lucky I am to have friends on this forum who understand how important our pets are and that they are worth all the trouble and worry. Thanks again for all the kind words, it means so much x

Glad he's back home.
I don't now what I'd do without this forum. We live in a rural area, and no one really understands about our love for bunnies - well, until they meet Squidgy that is!

They said they have lanced the abscess and just to clean and gunk that comes out of it. I hope thats a good thing as I wasn't told it was going to be lanced :?

Bless him and boo hoo to the unsupportive friend..... even some so called animal lovers still seem to hold rabbits at a lower level than other pets, which I find odd, but anyway..... hope Hobbes makes a full recovery and is back to full health soon. x

He's had a little bit of food and Phoebe has washed him, they are so cute together. I like having them indoors, even if they do take up my dining room. I think they might get fed up with me fussing over them though

Yes they always lance an abcess as you cant let them fill up again. If they have told you to just clean out the gunk they must be pretty certain that is the end of Hobbes' abcess as with little man they told me it was far too deep and he had to have a hole in his neck for me to squeeze out the gunk each day - Little Man's was too deep to treat.
So yay for Hobbes and I am sending him lots of vibes, when do you have to take him back?

No they didn't say what the cause was, i shall ask when i take him back for his check up. I thought it maybe teeth related but they said his teeth were ok :?
Maa's head abscess was caused by a piece of stalky timmy hay getting lodged in her gum (as if timmy hay wasn't expensive enough, I get a £550 vet bill on top!)
No they didn't say what the cause was, i shall ask when i take him back for his check up. I thought it maybe teeth related but they said his teeth were ok :?
Without trying to scare you, it could be a root problem, but you wouldn't really without x ray. Hun it could be just nothing, I imagine they've had a good route about in his mouth and would know if there was any rooty problems really :D. Zippy's reoccoring abcsess are due to her teeth, she has them done every six to eight weeks, only a few left now so hopefully we'll be able to get the last of them out for good.
I am so pleased he's perking up, this is great news and I don't blame him having his meds on a bit of toast, what a treat. Sending lots and lots of vibes still. :D
