How big should a hutch be to comfortably house 2 small rabbits (nethie and mini-lop)?

They dont spend much time in their hutch, just at night.

Now that they seem to be getting on with each other we want to house them together. So just wondering...

I'd get a shed, so much more for your money :D

Haven't got room for a shed, hence why they are indoors 99% of the time... 'outside' is covered.

I have a 6ft single hutch for my two young rexes and they seem very comfortable. I wouldn't be happy to house them in anything smaller, and they only spend time in there at night too. A 5ft combination hutch or double-storey is good enough too.

5ft X 2ft X 2ft is suitable. I wouldnt try for anything smaller than that and of course, the bigger the better.

Would this be suitable for housing my bunnies?

I have this exact one. I personally love it, great to clean out, very warm and snuggly and great space. I don't like the look of the other hutch, the inside part is too small in my opinion. And if you get this hutch, get it with legs. it's so much easier. And it's relatively cheap in price, and great in quality.

I'd go for the second one http://www.happyhutch.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=58&categoryID=7 over the first one, I don't like the amount of space in that hutch, even for small bunnies. If you wanted to get a hutch over run, the 6ft Happyhutch over run is great, but otherwise go for the 5ft x 2 x2 as a minimum - that way you meet minimum recommended standards and your bunnies have loads of space being small buns. In my 6x2x2 hutch once both rabbits are in it's not as 'huge' as you might think

Currently we have 2 separate hutches...

One like...

http://www.netpetshop.co.uk/ebay/EbayTemplates/images/SRH7003/RabbitHutchSRH7003_1.jpg

This is a 4ft length hutch and used to house Frosty on his own before they were bonded.

The other one is a 4ft hutch but single storey but its wider. This is pre-bonding Smudge's home.

I was thinking about some how linking them together by modifying them slightly to make one big hutch. I think that neither of them is big enough to house 2 bunnies.

So would it be better to get a brand new larger hutch and sell the others?

I'd get a brand new hutch and sell the others. They are good hutches but not big enough for two bunnies.

How big are the hutches in the above link?
The run is a very good size for two bunnies.

I'd buy a new one and sell the others. When bonded they will snuggle up together in a hutch, not two seperate ones, so you'll probably find one is unused and the other one isn't big enough. If they have access to a run 24/7 as mine do, then mine don't really use their hutch only for eating and pooing in and they tend to live in the run. So I guess it depends on where your two will spend most of their time. If you are intending to shut them in a hutch overnight then get a big one, if they are going to go in a run overnight then you could amend your existing hutch with a large predator proof run

The only problem i can see with adding a run to the hutch as it is that the enclosed area for sleeping wouldn't be that big for them to snuggle up in.

I am trying to find a larger hutch at the moment with the prospect of selling the other two.

Would 5ft (60") be sufficient or would 6ft be better?

Does width make a difference? (and no naughty comments from the ladies please!)

I like the hutches which are 2ft deep and 2ft wide. 5ft would be big enough, but as they say bigger is better ;) If you have the space for 6ft then for the small extra cost I'd go for that, but if not 5ft would suffice

the 2 old ones could be converted for a bigger hutch as in attached to each other, rick

If they're inside 99% of the time anyway, couldn't you get an indoor cage or crate just for night times?

The first one looks ok if it's big enough (i can't understand the dimensions!! :D:lol:) but I dislike the second and third ones. Please do not get the third one. It's cruel in my opinion.

This is the best out of the ones you have picked. What exactly are you looking for? ie. single storey, combination, two storey???? And what's your budget?

Well ideally i would sell the other two as they were bought to house them pre-bonding. The money from those would then be put into buying a new larger hutch for the pair.

They don't need a hutch to house them all the time as they are in the house and have free range pretty much. The o/h doesn't want them in the house all the time and i admit that sometimes they need to go out.

I am limited for space. The back yard isnt that big, i'd say about 4ft wide by 12ft long. Our back garden isnt secure and I wouldn't feel happy with a hutch out there.

I'd say our budget (assuming the hutches sell for a reasonable amount at about 40-50 quid each) would be about another 50 quid on top of that.

I just want them to have enough space in the hutch to get a bit of exercise but also a bit of space from each other.

I think a single storey is big enough for the night outdoors. If you get a 5ftx2ftx2ft, that would fit, wouldn't it?

I've had rabbitshack hutches for guineapigs and I don't rate them at all for rabbits, they aren't tall or deep enough and are very softwood so get gnawed easily.

I stuck mine out the front of our house and the sellers came knocking!! Then an advert in the local shop sold my HappyHutch hutch/run, so I'm sure you can find a buyer

Which one was the Rabbitshack hutch? The one I intended to buy?

I have advertised mine in the local Friday-Ad but might also try pet shops to.

We went to P@H today and saw this hutch for £100.

http://www.adoos.co.uk/post/2013426/new_boxed_rabbit_hutch

Its dimensions were 5.5ft (L) x 2.2ft (W) x 2.5ft (H)

Is that suitable?

I have found this on e-bay...

I have asked if the run can be detached and used separately.

Otherwise looks ideal.
