I currently have two lionhead rabbits living together in an outdoor hutch they are now 7 months old and although I have tried and persisted with litter training in the past it has rarely been successful. Occasionally my rabbits wee in their litter tray (which is a corner tray) but prefer to wee everywhere else and have no specific place for weeing and leave their droppings everywhere and always have. Is there anything I can do to encourage them to use their tray and save me work! Or is it a lost cause?:?
Hi there!
Are they both neutered/ spayed? That usually helps in the training.

Are they speyed/neutered? It usually helps if they are. Milo my male was useless, he pooped everywhere, but since his snip he's been brill. He still has some accidents, but the wee is usually in the litter tray. It also helped because one day I accidently switched his litter tray with one of the girls trays and he decided he had to scent it:lol:

All mine are sucessfully litter trained after I realised that they would wee/poop wherever there was hay.
All mine live in sheds and I used to cover the floors in a layer of straw and hay, but all of them just did their stuff everywhere.
Last summer I changed the layouts of their sheds so that they had a carpeted area, litter trays that are changed daily with lots of fresh hay, a hayrack or a bowl with their hay/readigrass in, and a bed area of vetbed. They almost instantly started weeing/pooping in their trays.
Now it's winter I give the little ones a big underbed storage box filled with straw & hay which they snuggle in, eat from, and poop/wee in, and that is changed every other day.
The giants have a big dog kennel in their shed that is packed out with straw/hay to keep them warm. TBH I've never seen them sleep in it, but because it has hay in there they wee/poop in there, but I won't bother with that in the summer - I only fill it to make me feel better knowing they have somewhere to snuggle up in:lol:
I'd try to reduce the area you cover with hay and maybe try putting their bedding in a big tray that they also use as litter. I think the key is to keep the trays clean and freshly topped up daily with new hay as once they are dirty they'll look for somewhere else to go.
I have had more luck litter training with large rectangular trays than the corner ones.
What substrate are you using?

I used to have a problem, then I had them spayed and their hutch changed. They used to have hay and straw everywhere so peed and pooed everywhere. Now I put megazorb over the living area and straw and hay in their bedroom and litter trays to eat and sleep in. They only go on the hay and/or straw so reduce the amount of hay/straw to the place where you want to clean out every day.

thanks so much for your help I keep persisting I cover the floor with sawdust and have the litter tray in the corner (Hi Back) this is filled with a wood litter which I buy from Pets at Home. Patch and Thumper have been spayed and to be honest they were better at toileting before they were spayed than after.
They poop everywhere!!!

Mine poop everywhere too, I just pick it up and put it in the bin. They just wee in the right places, which is good.

Thanks for all your advice have been out with my vinegar this afternoon and cleaned all round their hutch except where I want them to wee and removed their sawdust and put hay in their bedroom. Fingers crossed they get the hint!
