View Full Version : is a small cage really a problem if it's rarely locked?

my rabbit's rectangular cage is pretty small, about 3 times his body length and only twice his length on the other sides. but he's only in it when i'm at work or gone for long periods of time. i used to put him in there when i went to bed, but i've been doing that a lot less and will probably stop altogether (i was a bit afraid i'd roll over him at night but last night a sudden movement by me got him moving real quick!)

so am i ok with keeping it? his food and water are in there so the door stays open. my other option is this: in one corner of my room there's a decent side aclove with extra sheets of rug and a litter box he likes to **** right next to. he loves the spot, and i want to make it his space, but what can i get to block it off and open up when i want?

or is the small cage fine considering he's rarely confined in it?

I think a cage that size is fine if he is free-range.

How many hours a week do you work, and how often are you gone out for a long time?

It depends on how long you work for :D x

I htink the smaller cage is fine if he is out for what sounds like the majority of the time... remmeber night time is pretty long and the tiem when he wil be most active. Mine are confined in the daytime but when I am home I let them out and they just sleep in one spot of the room all day (usually 9-4) :?

However if you woudl prefer to make the area you talk of that he likes his own then why not try some puppy pen panels? Thats what I now have... and then just an extra litter tray or somehting (which will extend his area in his world )

All sounds fine to me. A wise man once said to me, in the wild they make burrows and sleep in them in quite confined spaces with lots of buns all day long... its a natural thing and a smaller space to sleep woudl make them feel safer.. if he out when active too then it all sounds just fine :D

I agree with others, if he's only confined for a short period of time, the cage size won't be a huge problem.

Another option could be to buy a small indoor run to attach to his cage in the day when you're at work. That way he's safe but still has a bit more space.
