  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

when to spay

We brought our "male" rabbit to the vet at 6 months old to get fixed. The vet told us the rabbit was female and "she was to young to spay". She is a year and a few months now...She is very mean and attacks people "im assuming harmone isssues"

what is a good age ? I searched the forum and everyone does it young but the vet told us 6 months is to young????

If your Vet said 6 months was too young to spay a Rabbit I think I would find another Vet, one more clued up on Rabbits ;)
Unless your Doe is exceptionally small or has any health problems then she could be spayed any time from 4- 6 months of age

6 months is definitely old enough to spay. I personally prefer to wait until about 8 months, but would do it earlier if the rabbit displays hormonal behaviour.

Perhaps ring round a few vets in your area to see which ones are experienced at spaying rabbits?

Good luck

Mine vet said 5-6months old that they would spay. They said that they'd wait a bit longer if the rabbit was small at 5 months but they don't have a problem at 6months.

I agree with Jane - this vet obviously knows very little about rabbits and you should find another that knows more.
At our surgery we much prefer to spay younger rabbits as they come round from the anaesthetic much quicker and easier, due to them not having so much fat to absorb it. It just makes the whole process easier too as you can actually see what is what inside. Even a rabbit that looks slim has fat stored internally.

My female rabbit was spayed at 6 months. Haven't heard of any vet with sufficient knowledge about rabbits disagreeing that 6 months is too young. So I agree with the advice of switching the vet.
