  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lily has a reddish patch behind her neck - I saw some scabs last week btu thought it was that her nails were long.

The vet said this could be the case but mentioned mites.
He said she could ahve got them from the hay (its from a farm shop)
any ideas how these get treated? aslo what size are they? I cant see any and its only on her shoulder in the centre that there's the issues, her hair seems thinner there are well so I think something is annoying her

Please advise...

Mites (walking dandruff) are treated with Ivermectin.

This can be purchased in drop form to be given on the back of the neck or in more severe cases as a course of injections.

I believe that the Bob Martin Spot on is suitable for rabbits and is available 'over the counter' but please double check that as Im not 100% sure.

Mites are very hard to see with the naked eye, they are whitish in colour so near on impossible to spot on a white rabbit.

More easily noticeable is fur loss, flakey powdery residue and sore skin.

Xeno used on my bun Digger for Walking dandruft, as invermec in, and easy to use. Also for Guinea pigs.
