  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eyes / Eyesight question

Poppy had some sort of injury or problem with her eye before she came to me. The general opinion of myself and the rescue she came from is she can't see much if anything out of her right eye. It's got a white mark as though from an old trauma and the eye is cloudy. It doesn't cause her any problems and the only difference it seems to make is she growls first and ask questions later if anything happens on that side of her.

I took some pictures of the buns today and when I was looking at the on the pc I noticed something. Her right eye (the cloudy one) shows up as abit cloudy in pictures taken with the flash....

Her left eye goes red, but it has lines in it. I'm wondering if that could mean she has something going on with that one too which maybe affects her vision...

I'm not worried about her or anything and I don't think it's something that needs a vet visit, although I might have a word with the vet when she goes for her next vaccination. I just thought it was strange and wanted another opinion or 2

I would advise you ask your Vet to check Poppy's eyes. She may have cataracts which can be the result of damage to the lens caused by EC.
Your Vet will also be able to check Poppy's Retina for signs of abnormalities

My doe has a cataract in one eye and it doesn't bother her. In fact in...7 or so months of life it's only bothered her once and she learned from that.

Rabbits sense of vision isn't that strong compared to hearing & smell and so rabbits can get on quite well even though they are partially/fully blind.

I realised when I was out with her earlier that I've got it the wrong way round  It's her cloudy eye that shows up as red and the normal looking one that doesn't. I will get the vet to check them out.
