Having a hutch made

sillyrabbit

Wise Old Thumper
Um the carpenters I have contacted have been quite rude :? Why cant I just buy one from a pet shop is all I have been getting  :? And just laughing when I say they arent big enough

Im well annoyed because its not like im asking anyone to do it for free or anything :?

How many people on here have done this? Im just sending Ryedale an email to see if they can get me a quote on postage x

good grief, you'd think they'd want the business!

there is a firm here who specialise in making rabbit hutches and runs, i guess there won't be one enar enoguh to you though. :( hope you get it sorted out

I know I think I sounded like any other customer who would be calling them :?

Another thing is my dad was a carpenter and when he died all his friends he worked with were like if you ever need anything you just call and I have had the same reaction from them now and I wasnt asking them to do it for nothing either

Oh well if they want to just turn away business thats their choice   Just seems a bit of a stupid thing to do to me :?

How annoying. What kind of work do they accept to do then? I thought that's what carpenters are there for. Back home you go to a carpenter, tell him exactly what you want, they give you a quote, and if it's ok, they'll make it for you.

I have ordered a big hutch from Ryedale and they said they will come and deliver it on a Sunday, two weeks from now. Sounds like they must have their own delivery service that goes around the country to drop off the hutches. So they might not deliver to the Channel Islands. :( Our company organises shipping of big crates to places all around the world, but as the crates normally contain paintings or sculptures, the fees are very high. Maybe you could find a courier that takes a hutch across to your island. You just need to know the dimensions and the weight of the hutch, and the courier could pick it up from Ryedale or Happy Hutch etc. and bring it to you. Still won't be cheap, I guess.

Well my happyhutches were sent by courier and they were over £100 each just for the postage so im expecting Ryedale hutches to be a lot more expensive to send because they are heavier and not flatpack. I will see what they say though!

Thats exactly what I thought! After calling the first place I was like what a :censored: but then they were all like that :? Dont even want to try any others now!

I think Sunday is the delivery day for this area, one of the Karen's got her hutches from them and they arrived on a Sunday.

dont be put off, try all of them you might find one who is willing to make you a perfect hutch for a fraction of the cost of getting one out to the channel islands

Wow, 100 Pounds for the postage only??? That is a lot of money.

You know what business you could always set up for yourself if you can learn to make hutches .....

Oh, ok. They must have a set route then which they do once a week or once every 2 weeks. Like we do when we transport art to and from Scotland.

I have seen CDs on ebay with plans for building hutches, but you still need someone who knows a bit of DIY to build one. I couldn't do it myself.

It is alot when its on top of the price of the hutches but I didnt really have much choice because they just dont sell big enough hutches anywhere here

aww I wish I was there, I'd make one for you. do you not have a mate who could help you to build your own?

Not really :( My brother and boyfriend could have a go but I want a well made one as my babies are going to be living in there  My dad made a wonderful enclosure for my sisters rabbit when we were younger, it was huge and very well built. I remember he couldnt even move it himself  I had three uncles who were carpenters too and would have done a great job but they are all dead now too :(

 I could have a go and practise building stuff ;) I have heard people complaining at the vets about lack of good hutches here though so its definetly something to think about :D

Maybe you could import a whole truck full of hutches and then sell them on locally. :D

Have you checked different courier services and transport companies for prices? I can't look for you as I don't have your postcode, that's what you usually have to type into your price search. I'll ask my bf when he comes home, he knows a lot of transport companies. I had two sofas and an armchair shipped over from Germany with our office neighbour who does international removals, cost me 360 Pounds, but I wanted MY sofas. :D

We looked at them all when I ordered the happyhutches :D The one I used was the cheapest ;)

In honour of them, learn to make your own. :D I made my run from scratch with no knowledge and it took two months and caused me many tears but at least now I have new skills. :D good luck with whatever you choose :)

Do you have a good hardware store where you can get T&G wood and have things cut to the right size for you?

Yes :D We made this (not the hutch, just the plastic protector on the frame  )

And the man in the shop measured and cut it for me :D He thought I was a bit odd but did it anyway

Aww that is a lovely idea :D Think I might actually try :D

I was going to say too that they do the CDs on ebay to build your own hutch... would be a very good business by the sounds of all the posts on here!!! Nowhere seems to do hutches that are actually big enough for buns! Very sad really cos a lot of people buy them and prob dont realise that they just arent big enough, think it may deter a lot of people from gettign buns in the first place if they knew all that was entailed not only with hutch sizes but caring for buns too - woudl stop a lot of unhappy buns being bought by those that think they are just 'cute' !

My bf went to Homebase and bought some pieces of perspex. They did not cut it for him, said they could not do that. Quite disappointing really. It is quite tricky to cut perspex if you don't have the proper work bench and tools, it cracks easily. We ended up cutting it on the carpet.

I ordered the night shutters for the Ryedale hutch, they are made of plywood. So we'll probably get more perspex and make "day shutters" that keep out the rain, but give the bunnies some light and a view of the garden.
