  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

White Spot in Tillys' Eye??

Hi I have just noticed a white spot in Tillys' eye, it has come up suddenly over the last couple of days. Tilly is only 7 months old and appears not to be bothered by it, but we are. The vet isn't sure what it is and is getting some advice saying it could be a worm or UVitus. Has anybody seen anything like this before or has any ideas what it could be? Below is a link to a Photo of the eye.

Please have a look.
Any advice much appreciated.

Hi

How old is Tilly and has she ever been wormed with Panacur?

It looks (and sounds) as though she may have a cataract which can be caused by a nasty protozoa known as Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC) which is probably the 'worm' your vet is referring too.

The first step your vet should take is to get Tilly on to a minimum of 6 weeks worth of Panacur Rabbit to try and destroy the EC spores before they cause any more damage.

EC can be confirmed through blood tests but 50% of domestic rabbits test positive for contact and the only way to determine if the infection is 'active' is a few blood tests taken weeks apart over the period of treatment to monitor wether the EC antibodies rise or fall, which will indicate a present infection.

It is recommended that ALL rabbits be wormed annually so I would suggest starting her on Panacur regardless of wether you chose to have the rather expensive blood tests done or not.

This RWA artical explains in more detail: http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rwf/articles/ecuniculi.htm

Thanks for that, she is only 7 months old and has had all her injections, but I don't think she has been wormed. Will ask the vet about the course of tablets when she goes back up.

Panacur is a paste ;).

If it is EC then at her age it is likely she contracted it from her mother.... if she proves positive perhaps contacting the person you got her from, if possible, would be a responsible thing to do some Mum and maybe even her siblings can be treated.
