  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help

New Kit
Hi I am new to this but need help.

I have a rabbit my local vet was needing a home for and as usual I felt sorry for her and took her home.

About a week ago I noticed she was making a nest, I took her back to the vet and they took xrays and said she was not pregnant.

I went out this morning to clean the cage and I noticed she had given birth last night.

Any info on what I need to do will be greatly appreciated.

Just leave her to it for now. Make sure she has plenty of hay to keep them warm with and up her pellet intake. If you know she's used to greens then they are good for lactating mums. Can't think of anything else but I'm no expert on mums and kits so I'm sure someone else will be able to help more soon. Good Luck!

Thanx for the info.

Would you know what type of rabbit she is?

I don't know a lot about them just what the vet told me and by google searches.

i woldnt go to that vet again if they missed the pregnancy and also they x-rayed a suspected pregnant animal, isnt that bad? in humans its not advised so im confused about that.

I definitely agree. Any vet, even a non-rabbit savvy vet could tell a pregnancy by feeling the abdomen.

Do you have any pics of your bun?

I'm no expert by any means, but may be able to tell what type of rabbit it is.

Good luck with the babies!

Hi Lisa - I don't know anything about baby rabbits but my vet Jason is a rabbit expert and although he's not in your area I'm sure if you rang him and say you need urgent advice he would help- contact me on zak_boot @yahoo.co.uk if you want his tel no.I will get straight back as checking e-mails frequently 2day n 2morrow. I had heard you're not supposed to touch the baby rabbits for a while?? -Sue

Thanks for the info, I did find a vet that handles rabbits and she is not far from where I live.
I didn’t realise that you are not supposed to x-ray them. I have 6 babies and all seem to be ok. I am not going to close to them and mum is doing a really good job they are all looking nice and chubby.

I don't know how to upload a picture but I will try tomorrow

I hope all goes well for you, mum and the babies. I bet you didn't expect to end up with seven when you took her in  !
