  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nia back at vet 19/11

I'm getting ready to take Nia back to the vet for 10am. Her eyes are running again and she hasn't wanted to eat this morning. I managed to get her to nibble at some grass and she took a small piece of carrot with the panacur paste on, but she has refused her favourite mini shreddie which is given as a treat and is usually a fail-safe way of getting the metacam down. Will update when I get back.

Nia is giving cause for concern so they are keeping her in to do an xray and Kevin wants to scope her as well. She was obviously in some pain when she was being examined as she was grinding her teeth. I now know the difference between happy content grinding and pain-induced grinding:( . Just waiting by the phone for some news.

Oh dear

Update 3.30

Kevin rang me at 11.30 to tell me that she has sustained 2 areas of damage to her spine in the thoracic area. There is distortion of between 10-15% but he hopes that with cage rest it will settle down. It's going to be a case of watching and waiting. He also did and endoscopy exam which showed that there was no internal bleeding, and he was about to flush her tear ducts while she was still "out". He then rang back a bit later to say that she was having a problem coming out of the anaesthetic...not a respiratory thing, but more to do with finding her back legs. He said he will ring me with an update after evening surgery so, as I've not heard anything else, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she is OK. Trying hard not to think too much about it. Poor wee Nia, she's such a gentle little thing:cry:

OK. Just had a call to say that Nia can come home now, but Kevin wants to talk to me, so I'm off with my heart in my mouth. My common sense tells me it's standard practice after ops, but my optimistic gene has left the building. Cross everything guys!
