  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Slightly crusty eye

Pipstrel

Mama Doe
well not really crusty but a bit like Piper's eye had run and then dried. This was last night and she hasn't cleaned it off by this morning but its no worse. Should I just bathe it for her or can it be a sign of illness?

Thanks

It can be a sign of infection, although sometimes rabbits get a bit of 'sleep' in their eyes like people.

If the eye is not sore looking, I'd probably bathe it with cooled boiled water or optrex eyewash and see if it returns within 24 hours. If it does, I'd pop her to the vet just for a check to be on the safe side.

Ok thanks i'll do that, it did look like sleep but thought she would have cleaned it herself by now. I'll clean it tonight and then check it in the morning.

Thanks

You may find Minstrel will clean it for her, I have a few bonded bunnies who do that.

If it dosnt clear up ask the vet to check her teeth and get some antibiotic drops such as Tiacil or Fucithalmic to see if they solve the problem.

OK thanks Sooz, Sean is going to try and clean it today as he is working from home then i'll see how she is tonight.

They aren't very good at cleaning each other tho, just the occassional lick now and again. He's always too busy chilling whilst she is off exploring!
